LLAIC LIT-LOVERS:

THE LIONESS OF BOSTON

BY EMILY FRANKLIN

LED BY IRMA NAPOLEON

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13 @ 10:30

By the time Isabella Stewart Gardner opened her Italian palazzo-style home as a museum in 1903, she was already well-known for scandalizing Boston’s polite society. But when Isabella first arrived in Boston in 1861, she was twenty years old and unsure of herself. Puzzled by the frosty reception she received from stuffy bluebloods, she strived to fit in. This is a portrait of what society expected a woman’s life to be, shattered by a courageous soul who rebelled and was determined to live on her own terms.

Click here before noon on Thursday, February 12, for a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.

Coming up:

  • March 13 – Maya’s Notebook by Isabel Allende – Abby Shapiro
  • April 10 - The Impossible Thing by Belinda Bauer – Dana Kaplan (note title change)
  • May 8 – The Lion Women of Tehran – Phyllis Cohen

MOVIE MAVENS

THE IMITATION OF LIFE (1959)

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20 @ 2 P.M. ON ZOOM

This remake of the 1939 movie stars Lana Turner, Sandra Dee, Susan Kohner and the incomparable Juanita Moore (the later two actresses were both nominated for an Academy Award). Director Douglas Sirk is best known for his work in Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s. He is now seen as one of cinema’s great social critics of that era.

The main themes are a woman trying to achieve her goal of being an actress and a young girl/woman who longs to outrun her African American identity. As personal ambition collides with inherited pain, both characters must confront the difference between the life they live and the life they long for. We look forward to a lively discussion of this powerful classic film.

The Imitation of Life is available to rent on Apple TV, YouTube and Fandango at home. Click here before noon on Thursday, February 19, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.
