The weather finally cooperated, and we held the LLAIC annual picnic on our fourth try. Everyone had a great time getting together and talking until almost 2 PM!

The Let's Go Trip to the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham was a great success. It was so interesting, with an excellent presentation by LLAIC member Lynn Hallen, that many in the group said they planned to visit the museum again.

NOTES FROM THE BOARD
The LLAIC Board of Directors met and wants everyone to know that the registration for fall semester classes is open and going smoothly. Some courses are already filled, and others are close, so sign up now. If you don’t want to take any courses but want to participate in any of the many other programs and trips that LLAIC offers, you still have to be a paid member.
If you are already a LLAIC member, you can take Regis College LLARC courses through our site. There are special instructions to follow. If you have any difficulty, you can call the people listed as helpers in the Registration box below.
Our Tuesday Summersession programs are drawing to a close, but Current Events and French group continue through the summer on Zoom. This week we also have a special program on August 18th. (see below article). If you know anyone who might be interested in LLAIC, please tell them about our Zoom session on August 25th.
All of our special interest groups and language groups will be up and running in September. There will also be more trips and special events. Read the rest of the Quill for details.
The Board wants to remind everyone that the “I” in LLAIC stands for Independent. We are run totally by and for our members. If you want to join in planning, organizing, or leading any activity, just contact the head of any of the committees. All suggestions or new perspectives are welcome.

Registration for fall courses began on Monday morning, July 20th. Many courses are still available, so sign up before they fill up! Make sure you are a current LLAIC member before then. Also make sure you have your username and password to log in.

"The Republican Party from Reagan to Trump:
Where the Right Went Wrong"
This presentation will cover the evolution of the Republican Party from Reagan through the presidencies of both George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, both terms of Trump as well as including the effects of the intervening Democratic presidencies. Focus will be on the influences, political and cultural, that have led the Republican Party to where it is today and how to find a path back to normalcy.

This week, we will be discussing major events in the news. Are we still at war with Iran? Will the Ballroom be built? Texas teaching The New Testament in every public school from K through 12. Separation of church and state? What about the recent primary elections? More ICE shocks? And hopefully some nice news!
Participants are welcome to raise topics that they think should be of interest to everyone.

We are excited to have a limited number of tickets to the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) production of “Rhinoceros,” starring Paul Giamatti and John Turturro, on Wednesday, September 9th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets cost $30.00 each.
The story: Everything seems normal one Sunday morning…until it’s not. One by one, friends and colleagues transform into rhinoceroses, and Berenger is forced to decide: will he follow the crowd or stand his ground?

FRENCH CONVERSATION
GROUP

On April 13, we started reading short stories from the book French Stories/Contes Francais: A Dual-Language Book, edited by Wallace Fowlie. We’ve started with the first story, Micromégas, by Voltaire.
You can see a link to the Kindle version of the book on Amazon here. Once there, you can click a box on the right to order it in paperback. CAUTION: There are other similar DUAL LANGUAGE books edited by Wallace Fowlie. Be sure to buy the edition with “Ten Short Stories by Voltaire, Balzac, Gide, Camus …” et. al., available from Amazon for Kindle or in paperback.
The complete list of stories is included in the description. You can see the actual table of contents by clicking on the “Read sample” link just below the picture of the book’s cover. It seems to take you to the FORWARD; if so, you must click the < arrow on the left side to move back through the table. You can also scan to the right and read almost all of the first story,
We meet for an hour and a half by ZOOM every other Monday at 1:30 p.m. We are intermediate to advanced French readers who read the French text out loud and discuss the stories in French. Please email Betty Salzberg if you would like to join us.
