LUNCH@LLAIC CONTINUES

TUESDAYS AT TEMPLE SHALOM

175 TEMPLE STREET, WEST NEWTON

LUNCH STARTS AT 1, PROGRAM AT 1:30

Join us at Temple Shalom on all your Tuesday afternoons from September 15 through the end of the semester for lunch and a delightful program! Drop in before class, after class, or just for the program. Bring your own lunch (we provide designer water and hot beverages) or email Jennifer Young if you want to order pizza ($3 for one slice or $5 for two).

LUNCH@LLAIC is open to guests and no RSVP is necessary, so bring a friend! The next programs are as follows:

  • 10/27 Matthew Bitner – How We Developed a Method for Saving Lives

In this live Zoom presentation, Matt will share how he and his co-founder Dani – a physician in emergency medicine – launched nCase Technologies and invented a naloxone carrying case designed to make overdose reversal accessible and stigma-free. He'll walk through the real challenges of startup life, the recognition they've earned, and the path from idea to design to market.

10/20 Break Week

11/3 Partakers: Transforming Lives for Incarcerated Women and Men

Did you know that the United States constitutes only 5% of the world's population, and that we claim 25% of its incarcerated populace? Partakers, a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization, is dedicated to reducing recidivism by supporting formerly and currently incarcerated individuals through a unique community mentor model along with educational institutions that offer those incarcerated an opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree. At this presentation, you will hear from a member of Partakers' staff who is also a long-time mentor and two graduates of the “College Behind Bars” program. You will learn how Partakers creates support networks that foster sustained transformation when prisoners can return to their communities.

  • 11/10 Joanne Fisher – Ancient Egypt, Drama, Spectacle, and Remarkable Characters

Why is ancient Egypt so compelling to us today? Why do we care so much about the gold, the pyramids, the hieroglyphic script, the mummies, and the extraordinary leaders like Nefertiti, Ramses, and Hatshepsut, people who flourished so many thousands of years ago? In this video presentation, we will learn about the uniqueness of Egypt, a protected realm full of riches and agricultural resources that allowed a divine kingship to develop. Ancient Egypt remains for us a place of mystery, fascination, and contradictions, and yet, we can also see the humanity of these extraordinary people.

Future programs:

  • 11/17 Alex Conn and Leo Laverdure – Introduction to Chatbots and AI: Part 2
  • 12/1 Don Bermont – Trivial Pursuit Game

LLAIC LOVES ART IS THRILLED

TO WELCOME

THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM

ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28 AT 1:30 pm TO HEAR ABOUT THE HILMA AF KLINT EXHIBIT

The Hilma af Klint exhibition at The Guggenheim Museum in New York attracted over 600,000 visitors. It was the most attended exhibition ever at the museum. The Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint (1869-1944), stipulated that her abstract paintings for The Temple could not be shown until 20 years after her death. She believed that the world was not yet ready to receive her abstractions and her process of creation. Af Klint's abstract paintings predated the work of other artists who had been previously considered to be the first to explore abstraction. Nevertheless, af Klint is today considered an art historical cul-de-sac!

Our docent will be Missy Lissette who is a practicing artist and museum educator at The Guggenheim and other New York museums. She taught at the university level for many years, but is now committed to new, interactive practices to facilitate experiences with art in the museum and online settings.

Click here before noon on Tuesday, October 27, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.

FRENCH CONVERSATION

GROUP

Monday October 26 @ 1:30 pm

On April 13, we started reading short stories from the book French Stories/Contes Français: A Dual-Language Book, edited by Wallace Fowlie. We’ve started with the first story, Micromégas, by Voltaire.

You can see a link to the Kindle version of the book on Amazon here. Once there, you can click a box on the right to order it in paperback. CAUTION: There are other similar DUAL LANGUAGE books edited by Wallace Fowlie. Be sure to buy the edition with “Ten Short Stories by Voltaire, Balzac, Gide, Camus …” et. al., available from Amazon for Kindle or in paperback.

The complete list of stories is included in the description. You can see the actual table of contents by clicking on the “Read sample” link just below the picture of the book’s cover. It seems to take you to the FORWARD; if so, you must click the < arrow on the left side to move back through the table. You can also scan to the right and read almost all of the first story,

We meet for an hour and a half by ZOOM every other Monday at 1:30 p.m. We are intermediate to advanced French readers who read the French text out loud and discuss the stories in French. Please email Betty Salzberg if you would like to join us.
