Event Recap

Hands-on classes at the Laguna Beach Library

While partnering with the Laguna Beach Library to bring science-based gardening information to the public, in May the Master Gardeners did a class on Drought Tolerant Gardening. Then library patrons were able to plant a wonderful pot of flowers to take home and support our friends, the pollinators, while using some of the new skills they learned.

The next class is on June 21st at 11:00 AM with the topic of Tomato Pests and Diseases. Each of the first 24 patrons to sign in for the class at the library, will plant a tomato in a grow bag and take that plant home with them, for their own harvest. We are thankful to work with many of the libraries in Orange County.

South Coast REC welcomed visitors from Australia Pork Limited!

Towards the end of May, we had the pleasure of hosting a leadership course from Australia Pork Limited. As part of their leadership course, participants from around Australia traveled to the United States to learn about other agricultural industries and the research, innovation, and outreach priorities and strategies of those industries. Their first stop was South Coast REC where they learned about UC ANR and UC Cooperative Extension, got to taste and learn about several avocado varieties, and heard from several advisors and programs about the work they do.

Thank you to Lindsey Pedroncelli and Rita Clemons for hosting the group and to Tammy Majcherek, Esther Lofton, Jason Suppes, Hannah Standerfer, Grant Johnson, and Rita Jakel for speaking with the group! We are so thrilled we got to meet them and share what we do at UC ANR and South Coast REC.

In The Media

Beatriz Nobua-Behrmann, Urban Forestry and Natural Resources Advisor, was featured in Landscape Contractor in an article titled "Managing Green Waste to Prevent Pest Spread".

When green waste is improperly disposed of, it can actually serve as a vehicle for transporting invasive pests and diseases. Here are some best management practices for managing disposal of green waste:

  1. Process green waste on-site when possible
  2. Avoid creating pest breeding grounds in staging areas
  3. Properly dispose of infested material
  4. Manage firewood responsibly
  5. Educate landscape crews and clients
