U.N. to invest $2m in fight against deforestation in Colombia

The U.N. Development Program will invest 7 billion pesos ($2.2 million) this year to support efforts against deforestation in Colombia. The goal, UNDP said in a statement, is to support the design and implementation of the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, or REDD+, program in Colombia.

The roadmap describes one national platform that all REDD+ stakeholders can use, which it says will drastically reduce the need for provinces, districts and other REDD+ proponents to develop and maintain their own GHG accounting systems which will reduce monitoring and transaction costs, timeframes and ensure consistency which should ultimately lead to an increased uptake of REDD+ activities in Indonesia.
  
Forest funding for Fiji
FIJI received a $7.75million forest carbon partnership facility grant last year to assist the Forestry Department make the necessary preparations for possible funding under REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) programs.

1st Meeting of new UN-REDD Programme Executive Board to take place in June
The UN-REDD Programme Executive Board is the new main body of oversight, operational guidance and decision-making for the Programme. Its mandate includes the endorsement of the UN-REDD Programme 2016-2020 Results Framework, selection of countries that will be supported through the different funding mechanisms of the new phase of the UN-REDD Programme, and monitoring and reporting on progress in the countries. 
UN-REDD Programme catalyses FAO support to countries in establishing their Forest Reference Emission Levels 
The UN-REDD Programme has directly supported five countries in preparing their forest reference level /forest reference emission level (FRL/FREL) submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). With their FREL now submitted, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Paraguay, Viet Nam and Zambia now have a benchmark for assessing their country's performance in implementing REDD+.  Learn more.
Asia-Pacific Forestry Week event explores question: "REDD+, is it really so difficult?"
The UN-REDD Programme facilitated a side-event at the third Asia-Pacific Forestry Week in February to address perceived challenges associated with REDD+ and to introduce participants to technical guidance resources. The event offered an opportunity to share some of the experiences and lessons from REDD+ readiness initiatives across the region.

United Nations Environment Assembly set to bring together world's environmental decision-makers
The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) of UNEP is the highest level of governance of global environmental affairs in the UN system. UNEA-2 will be held 23 to 27 May 2015 under the overarching theme, Delivering on the Environmental Dimension of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
Climate change will be discussed at UNEA-2 under a proposed resolution on promoting the effective implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement. Learn more. 
Costa Rica's REDD+ preparation: UN-REDD Programme support realizes impacts 
The UN-REDD Programme has been providing technical assistance to Costa Rica through various Targeted Support initiatives since 2014. Through the coordination of these efforts among agencies and the joint work with the local counterpart, FONAFIFO, the impact of this support has made contributions to Costa Rica's REDD+ preparation process.
REDD+ Academy advances with national versions in Latin America 
Several countries have started to adapt REDD+ Academy learning, materials, resources and methodologies to their local contexts and capacity building needs, and to develop national versions of the REDD+ Academy -- as a result of their participation in the UN-REDD Programme's Latin America and Caribbean Regional REDD+ Academy in October 2015. 
GAMBUT Project addresses Indonesia's peatland fires  
The UNEP project for Generating Anticipatory Measures for Better Utilization of Tropical Peatlands (GAMBUT) aims to reduce the number of burning fires, or hotspots, and consequently, reduce haze impacts and greenhouse gas emissions from key fire-prone areas.  Learn more.
UN-REDD Programme Supports Colombia's Efforts to Fight Deforestation / Programa ONU-REDD acompaña a Colombia en lucha contra la deforestación
In order to define the actions to reduce deforestation and forest degradation that are key to the development of Colombia's REDD+ Strategy, the Steering Committee of Colombia's UN-REDD Programme held its annual meeting in Bogotá on March 9th, 2016.  Learn more.

Plant a Tree to Mark April 22 Signing of the Paris Agreement: Join Earth Day Network's 'Trees for the Earth'
In New York, on April 22, governments will sign the new Paris Climate Change Agreement en route to it coming into force as millions of people around the globe mark annual Earth Day, or International Mother Earth Day. Earth Day's theme this year is focused on trees with the aim of mobilizing nearly eight billion plantings, or one for every man, woman and child alive by 2020 -- together we can maybe do it sooner!

The REDD+ Academy e-course provides a better understanding of REDD+ components, planning and implementation, as well as tools to promote the implementation of REDD+ activities on a national level. It is self-paced, free of charge and available on UN CC:e-Learn platform. Register today.

Ethiopia gains forest sector knowledge from China and Republic of Korea
With UN-REDD Programme support, a high-level Ethiopian delegation participated in a South-South knowledge exchange in the Republic of Korea 1-8 March 2016 followed by a visit to China 9-14 March 2016. They sought to learn from the Republic of Korea and China's valuable experiences on implementing bold national-scale forest management and bamboo development.

Work underway to establish Bhutan's Satellite Land Monitoring System
As part of ongoing activities to support Bhutan's establishment of its National Forest Monitoring System, FAO's technical Satellite Land Monitoring team held a one-week workshop on the technical implementation of a web portal for data transparency in the UNFCCC context.   Learn more.
Lessons on how to ensure full and effective participation of Asia-Pacific civil society and indigenous peoples in REDD+
The UN-REDD Programme has emphasized the need to engage  civil-society organizations and indigenous peoples in REDD+. A review of key lessons emerging through this experience in the Asia-Pacific region has been compiled.  Learn more .
Is REDD+ feasible in the presence of vibrant agricultural and livestock sectors? Some findings from Paraguay
The UN-REDD National Joint Programme in Paraguay has completed an analysis on the capacity of REDD+ as a policy alternative to deforestation by the agricultural and livestock sectors. Key findings have been compiled.

Filling the missing gap: building innovative and strategic partnerships in Zambia's transition from REDD+ readiness to implementation
Zambia has become one of the first African countries to submit its forest reference emission level to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); develop a measurement, reporting and verification system; and establish a country approach to addressing and respecting safeguards. On the heels of these significant achievements, the question now being addressed by Zambia is, "how does the country transition from readiness to implementation in a systematic and strategic manner, and how can it fill in the missing gap of investments into REDD+?".  Learn more.
Kenya explores REDD+ policy opportunities to invest in efficiency improvement of its forestry sector
The Government of Kenya has released a report that identifies whether efficiency improvements in Kenya's forestry sector can lead to REDD+ results and hence be interesting as targeted policies or measures? The results are striking and show that such measures have high potential from a REDD+ perspective, but crucially also stimulate economic development.

Ethiopia becomes first African country to submit forest reference level to UNFCCC 
With its FRL established, Ethiopia is now ready to measure its performance in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), and has met a key requirement for receipt of results-based payments for verified emissions reductions.

Tunisia's REDD+ Strategy Taking Shape
Tunisia's forests, while relatively small in terms of land cover (6.5%), are a vital source of livelihoods for close to one million inhabitants and provide important hydrological functions and biodiversity benefits in the Mediterranean ecoregion. REDD+ is a rallying point to bring together policymakers, technical government staff, civil society, researchers, and others to develop a strategy to manage these remaining forests sustainably. Listening to the Forest in Panama.  UN-REDD Programme Active Listening Process - Women's Channel 
During 2014 and 2015 Panama carried out an "active listening" process with key stakeholders on the situation of the forest and the challenges to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation looking at the participatory construction of Panama's National REDD+ Strategy. The dialogue included several key stakeholder groups; including a specific channel for women. This video shows the voices and opinions of women from indigenous, afro-descendant and campesino communities of Panama.

Webcast: Joint FCPF/UN-REDD Programme 2015 Global REDD+ Knowledge Exchange
More than 100 participants from 30+ countries took part in this country-led REDD+ knowledge exchange held in San Jose, Costa Rica in November 2015. All individual session videos are now available
