ELCs tied to destruction of forests in new report

Cambodis's most crucial forests are disappearing at a rate of more than 2,000 square kilometres a year, as agricultural firms continue to harvest timber by illegal means in protected areas and national parks, according to a study from Washington-based Forest Trends.

Participants commend Ghana Integrity Initiative for initiating the MSP REDD+ project

The Ghana Integrity Initiative community Multi-Stakeholder Platform project for effective implementation of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) activities in Ghana, has been lauded at Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Deforestation in Tanzania could cost the national economy 5,588 billion Tanzanian Shillings between 2013 and 2033 on current trends, highlighting the importance of investing in the forestry sector to alleviate poverty and boost growth, according to a new report. 


Liberia: World Bank Team Hails Liberia's Redd+ Initiatives

According to the New Liberia Media Initiatives, the World Bank team has hailed the government's Agenda for Transformation or Vision 2030 as an enabling policy framework, which is emerging as well as legislation of lands rights policy, still being highly anticipated.

The document provides a structural overview of UNFCCC requirements for FREL/FRL construction, summarizing UNFCCC guidance and translating it into elements needed for FREL/FRL construction. A description of possible advantages and risks associated with different options for each of these elements is added to provide some practical considerations to FREL/FRL construction. 

This report provides examples of areas where REDD+ actions could potentially deliver individual specific benefits, in addition to the climate mitigation benefits of REDD+.

The UN-REDD Programme is pleased to launch of the Resource Guide for Advanced Learning on REDD+, produced by UN CC:Learn. The guide includes resources from key REDD+ technical information sources including the UN-REDD Programme and its collaborating UN agencies (FAO, UNDP and UNEP), and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility.

Need for renewed momentum towards achieving climate accord

UN-REDD Programme hosting high-level side event at World Forestry Congress

This is a high-level event on the role of forests and a mechanism to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) to fight climate change and realize sustainable development. The 2016-2020 role and strategy of the UN-REDD Programme will also be highlighted as a tool to realize this potential. Register to attend.

Banking on REDD+: Can bank and investor risk policies on soft commodities benefit REDD+?

A new UN-REDD Programme Info Brief assesses whether soft commodity risk policies by banks and investors could potentially benefit UN-REDD Programme partner countries to achieve REDD+ results.

Community Based REDD+ call for proposals in Panama a success / Exitosa respuesta a la convocatoria REDD+ de Base Comunitaria "Bosques de Vida" en Panamá

Ten proposals amounting to approximately US$ 250,000 have been submitted from indigenous peoples and campesino communities in Panama in response to the Community Based REDD+ national call for proposals.

UNFCCC REDD+ GUIDELINES

The Cambodia REDD+ National Programme is developing a decision support tool that combines spatial and economic information, with assistance from the UN-REDD Programme. As part of this process, a week-long capacity-building and joint working session brought together representatives from government agencies, non-government organizations and academia involved in REDD+ planning and implementation in Cambodia. Learn more.

A two-day training focused on supporting greenhouse gas inventory capacity building of national staff was held in Islamabad gathering over 20 country experts from various national and subnational entities. Learn more.

Satellite Land Monitoring Systems for REDD+ - Understanding the basics by using remote sensing data

This video provides information on how remote sensing tools can help in reducing emissions from forest deforestation and degradation (REDD+) and how UN agencies are supporting countries to get ready for REDD+. Within the UN-REDD Programme FAO along with UNEP and UNDP supports countries to develop tools for remote sensing, satellite data processing for monitoring REDD+ activities and for the measurement of forest activity data to support the design and implementation of national forest inventories as well as greenhouse gases inventories.

Los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades afro-colombianas tuvieron una activa participación durante el taller de inicio del programa ONU-REDD en Colombia. En este video hablan sobre sus expectativas acerca de las contribuciones que el Programa puede hacer al avance de REDD+ en el país.

Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities had an active participation during the inception workshop of the UN-REDD Programme in Colombia. In this video they talk about their expectations around the contributions of the Programme for the advancement of REDD+ in the country.
