Dharma for Your Day

Joy in the Midst of Suffering

In celebration of Vesak, several Sanghas in India, the Ahimsa Foundation, and monastics at Plum Village Monastery gathered online. They shared about the suffering endured during the pandemic, and cultivated community, gratitude, and joy for being alive in the present moment.

As part of this gathering, Brother Phap Lai shared this Dharma talk on how we can nourish our joy in the midst of suffering without feeling conflicted (33 mins).

Monastic Life

Reflections on the Buddha, his Teachings, and the Ceremony of Vesak

"I relate to the Buddha as a great teacher, and a guide for me in my daily life. Being a human being, he felt all the emotions I feel, and his humanness is the depth of his teaching. He lived life fully as a human being."
 - Sister Chan Tu Nghiem

During this year's Vesak celebration at Plum Village Monastery, monastics shared how they relate to the Buddha and the ceremony of Vesak, which commemorates the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing.

Deepening Practice

Reverence for the Land

"Something happens, which is quite beautiful, when we start to grow, it could be a radish, it could be some lettuce, it could be a tomato plant. Just the experience of cultivating that plant and then eating the food you’ve cultivated yourself is special."

We invite you to enjoy this inspiring interview with Mick McEvoy, manager of the Upper Hamlet Happy Farm at Plum Village Monastery. Mick shares about the challenges of bringing mindfulness to farming, the magic of growing your own food, and future ecological healing through rewilding.
