Strengthening Our Workforce, One Learner at a Time

In celebration of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and National GED Day, Literacy Alliance CEO Marcus Haile joined Literacy Alliance alum Taylor Wright and JAX Chamber CEO Daniel Davis for a panel discussion with our supporters and volunteers on the power of adult education.

The conversation highlighted a simple truth: investing in adult learners strengthens our local talent pipeline today. Adults with stronger foundational literacy skills are more likely to secure stable employment, earn higher wages, and support their children's academic success — creating a ripple effect that benefits families, employers, and the community.

Building a strong workforce starts early — and it doesn't stop there. Adult learners are proof that we can keep strengthening our talent pipeline right now.

Jax Chamber CEO, Daniel Davis, Literacy Alliance Alum, Taylor Wright, and CEO, Marcus Haile, shared perspectives on the Talent Pipeline as part of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

Adult Education Access Takes Many Forms

To make adult education truly accessible, our hybrid classes and tutoring adapt to our students' busy lives. We provide the laptops, cameras, and materials our students and volunteers need to thrive online and in person.

This flexibility allows pairs like Khloe and Lara to make incredible strides. They meet twice a week for GED prep, recently bringing geometry to life by using a soda can to calculate the area of a cylinder!

Volunteer Lara shared, "It's been a privilege to watch my student grow in confidence as her academic skills begin to flourish! I'm so excited for all the doors that will open for her as a result of her hard work. She's got what it takes to achieve all her goals, and I'm thrilled to be on this journey with her!"

We continue to need more volunteer tutors! Interested in learning more? Just click the button below!

Khloe gets online with her tutor at the Literacy Alliance offices in the Jessie Ball duPont Center.

When her tutor Lara can't make it in person, she still gets online so Khloe doesn't miss a beat.

Two Different Student Stories Show Different Paths

Two recent student stories illustrate how each student has a unique set of circumstances and goals. The Literacy Alliance supports a wide range of adult learner goals with an equally wide range of educational options, including small group classes, self-paced learning, a drop-in learning lab, and one-on-one tutoring.

Juliet’s story is a great example of how it is never too late to continue your education. And, Keltcy’s story highlights that it's possible to overcome setbacks.
