The Students Were the Stars!

The 2024 student celebration was a great success and the students were the stars of the show! This year’s celebration featured 40 students that increased their reading or math levels, 21 GED and adult high-school graduates, 28 that passed at least one of the four GED tests, and another eight that attained their ServSafe food safety certificate. Thank you to Dazzling Daisy's Anointed Creations for the decorations, The Planner 360 Photobooth, Manisha Joshi for the photagraphy, and Bono’s Pit Bar-BQ for catering the event!

The Literacy Alliance’s Corrections Education Director, Sherri Jackson (pictured above), recently represented us at COABE’s national conference in Nashville. She brought back new research, techniques and ideas for adult literacy and adult education.

Local Work and National Partners

The Literacy Alliance combines the power of volunteer tutors with professional educators at a local level. While that work is focused on the Northeast Florida community, we also work with national partners to ensure those volunteers and instructors have all the training and professional development they need to stay current on best practices. We are proud to be Members of two national groups–the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) and ProLiteracy–that advocate, support, and ensure the quality of local adult learning programs throughout the country.

Florida Literacy Coalition Volunteer Teachers Needed

The Florida Literacy Coalition is looking for volunteer conversational English instructors to conduct online small group classes for adults with limited English skills. Classes are presented via Zoom during regularly scheduled times throughout the week. No teaching experience is required and all instructional materials will be provided.

Classes will start in late April or May. Volunteers would facilitate one 90 minute class each week for approximately eight weeks. The day of week and time are flexible!
