National GED Grad Day Edition!

May 2024

Happy National GED Grad Day!

Today is National GED Grad Day, and over 20 new GED Grads were recently recognized at our Night with the Stars Celebration of Success!

The General Educational Development (GED) certificate is approved by the State of Florida as an official high-school diploma for adult learners and is accepted for college enrollment and employment that requires a formal diploma. It is the real deal! (Follow this link to learn more.)

Our recent grads are now on their way to post-secondary opportunities including job training and job placement services, career certifications requiring an accredited diploma, and classes at higher education institutions such as Florida State College of Jacksonville.

Getting a GED takes time and hard work, but the results are life long and life wide. The entire Literacy Alliance team is very proud of all our grads!

“I wanted a fresh start and for education to lead the way.” - Gabbie L.

Recent Literacy Alliance GED Grad, Gabbie, was recognized with the prestigious Flight to Freedom Award from the Florida Literacy Coalition.

At the awards reception, Gabbie shared how she stoppped attending school after 7th grade to care for family. Many years later she enrolled with the Literacy Alliance to attain her GED. After getting her diploma, Gabbie then enrolled in the Literacy Alliance’s Volunteer Florida AmeriCorps national service program where she is helping others complete their GED.

Gabbie's next steps are to begin her studies in social work at Florida State College of Jacksonville! Congratulations Gabbie on all your successes!

The Jacksonville Housing Authority is Florida's Adult Literacy Partner of the Year!

Also at the Florida Literacy Coalition annual literacy awards, the Jacksonville Housing Authority (JHA) was recognized as Partner of the Year for their work with the Literacy Alliance to offer adult literacy and GED classes at their Brentwood, Southwinds, and Beaches WAVES sites.

The JHA team of Delois Wyman, Dazzanae Walker, and Jacquelyn Thompson attended the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of JHA.

Thank you JHA for partnering with us to expand neighborhood access to adult literacy and adult education!

Comcast Sponsors Digital Literacy

Getting a GED requires learning the basics of using a computer and the internet to effectively participate in the learning.

The Literacy Alliance continues to advance digital literacy for adult learners looking to continue their education and recently became an affiliate of the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA).

We support NDIA in promoting policies that address the digital divide while we also provide direct access for adults to digital literacy skill building.

The Literacy Alliance's digital initiatives are made possible by Comcast - the primary sponsor for our digital literacy work. Thank you Comcast!

The Literacy Alliance is generously supported by individual donors and the following partners.
