While constructing meaning from text often seems effortless for the skilled reader, science tells us that comprehension is complex and multidimensional. This understanding calls for a blueprint, a master plan, that reflects this complexity while identifying critical components of informed instruction. The Blueprint prompts educators to design and deliver instruction focused on developing language processes, skills, and knowledge, including word meaning, sentence comprehension, background knowledge, text structures, and inferences necessary to express understanding. It guides the identification of routines, strategies, and activities essential to the acquisition of these crucial contributors to making meaning. This session will explore the why, the what, and a bit of the how of the Reading Comprehension Blueprint. |
