Dear Members of the Cardinal Newman community,
As the seasons change and our first quarter ends, I am reminded of a passage from the English poet Percy Shelley’s “Hymn to Intellectual Beauty” that runs thusly:
“There is a harmony/ In autumn, and a lustre in its sky,/Which
through the summer is not heard or seen,/As if it could not be, as if it hadnot been!”
Autumn is a special time of year. Unlike the exuberance of Summer, Autumn brings with it a somber joy; a comfortable sense of settling in for the rest of the year. The dark and chilly evenings encourage us to retreat indoors with our books, while the bright and fresh mornings invite us to walk amongst the fallen leaves and marvel at Nature’s beauty. Autumn is the season of the scholar.
It is appropriate, then, that the beginning of second quarter corresponds with the maturation of the Autumn season. We begin to see our academic progress and find ways to improve upon it. We look forward to spending time with our families at the Thanksgiving table, and we prepare ourselves for that most joyous period in the liturgical calendar, Advent and Christmas. There truly is a harmony in autumn, and, as we move through second quarter into Winter and Christmas, I hope that we all have a few moments to reflect on and enjoy the peculiar joys of this season.
In Christ,
