Election 2019 and the Age of Uncertainty
The 2019 Galbraith Lecture in Public Policy will feature CTV’s Evan Solomon and present a deep dive into the forces and factors at play in 2019 federal election and what they say about Canada's place in the world. As Western democracies deal with the rise of populism and a backlash against the norms, alliances and treaties of the last 75 years, what are the biggest challenges and opportunities ahead for Canada?

The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Memorial University’s Dr. Amanda Bittner and Memorial alumnus and political strategist, Tim Powers.

How values-based procurement can help build healthy local economies
Large institutions have big purchasing power – what if institutions used that purchasing power to further their social and economic impact on the region they serve. Eastern Health recently embarked on a “values-based procurement strategy” that seeks innovative ways for enhancing outcomes for both patients and local businesses.

Join us for a Yaffle Connects session with Ron Johnson (Vice President-Information Services & Rural Health) and Deanne Piercey (Associate Director – Strategic Procurement, Financial and Administrative Services, Memorial University of Newfoundland) to explore the potential opportunities, benefits and practicalities of values-based procurement approaches.

Older Workers Summit
NL's aging workforce & shrinking population can have a drastic impact on the labour market & the ability of businesses to find workers. But NL's demographic situation could also present an opportunity - more and more people are working well into their 60's and 70's.

What can employers do to attract and retain older workers? What barriers do older workers face, and how can we find solutions to create more age-friendly work environments? What opportunities and spin-off effect could these solutions have for all workers?

Join us for a day-long discussion and action planning workshop on the challenges for older workers, and the possible solutions and strategies that can help address this labour market opportunity.

Harris Centre - West White Rose Employment Diversity
Research Fund
Experience in the resource development sector has demonstrated that segments of the population continue to be under-represented. How do we develop programs and initiatives to improve the participation of traditionally under-represented groups?

To better understand this issue, and help build capacity to address it, Memorial University’s Harris Centre will fund research projects related to growing the pool of available qualified workers from under-represented groups in the natural resources sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. Funding for this program has been provided by the West White Rose Project co-venture partners, specifically Husky Energy (Operator), Suncor, and Nalcor.

Season 2, Episode 15:
Self-care: Rural doctors Support Each Other
Being doctor in a rural community has unique challenges; from knowing too much about your friends and neighbours, to being the first line of defense in difficult life or death situations, it can be hard to find someone who really understands. This time on Rural Routes, we listen in on a group of four women, each practicing in, or with experience in, rural Ontario communities, whose informal support network has become a crucial line of support, both in terms of their work and their lives. Join us as they laugh about their experiences, share their most challenging experiences, and explain why, despite the distance between them and their busy schedules, they make time to connect.
