The David Curran Award for Memorial University Undergraduate Students

This scholarship was established by the Harris Centre, Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Economic Development Association, and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador in recognition of David Curran, a passionate advocate and tireless champion of rural Newfoundland.

The award recognizes one Memorial University undergraduate student who embodies that same spirit of community development innovation.

Harris Centre's RAnLab Analytics Helping NL Plan for Tomorrow
As a relatively small place, with relatively few people, data that paints an accurate picture of Newfoundland and Labrador is often hard to come by.

But finding that data – and interpreting its meaning and putting it in the hands of the right people – is exactly what the Harris Centre’s Regional Analytics Lab (RAnLab) is designed to do.

Call for Applicants
The ELK Award
The ELK award is granted once a year to a student at Memorial University from any community in Bonne Bay, the Great Northern Peninsula, Change Islands, or Fogo Island. It is endowed by Dr. Pam Hall from the royalties of her book, Towards an Encyclopedia of Local Knowledge: Excerpts from Chapters 1 and 2.

Applicants can be at any stage of their university studies and must submit a 1-2 page essay on the topic of Local Knowledge and its importance in their community.

Amount: $1000

Building the ARC
The Aging Research Centre – Newfoundland and Labrador will hold its first annual general meeting and conference May 7-8. Titled “Building the ARC,” the conference, organized in conjunction with SeniorsNL, aims to continue to build a critical mass of researchers and community members committed to growing aging research in the province. The conference will open on the evening of May 7 with a “plain language” keynote lecture given by Dr. Janice Keefe, director, Nova Scotia Centre on Aging, followed by an opening reception. The following day will consist of research talks, poster presentations and an ARC-NL annual general meeting.
