From the Executive Director's Desk | January 2026

As we step into a new year, the Kentucky Council of Area Development Districts remains focused on advancing the work that strengthens our communities and supports Kentucky's continued growth. The start of a new year always brings renewed purpose, and 2026 is no exception. With the General Assembly now in session, the KCADD are working closely with legislators and partners across the state to advocate for policies and investments that matter most to our regions: sustainable infrastructure, strong local economies and resources that enhance quality of life for every Kentuckian.

This month also marks a time of reflection and gratitude as we celebrate the retirement of Joanna Shake, executive director of the Green River Area Development District. After more than 30 years of devoted service, Joanna leaves behind an enduring legacy of collaboration, leadership and community impact. Her career is a model of the dedication and teamwork that define the ADD system, and we wish her nothing but the best in her well-earned retirement.

As 2026 unfolds, KCADD remains steadfast in its mission to serve as the collective voice of Kentucky's Area Development Districts, working hand in hand with state and local leaders to support innovative solutions and advocate for our communities' needs. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected Kentucky.

Sincerely,

Casey Ellis

GRADD's Joanna Shake to retire after 32 years of service

After more than three decades of dedicated service to the Green River region, Green River Area Development District (GRADD) Executive Director Joanna Shake will retire at the end of this month. Her departure marks the close of an extraordinary career rooted in public service, collaboration, and a deep commitment to improving communities across western Kentucky.

Joanna’s journey with GRADD began in 1994 as an intern, a starting point that would grow into a lifelong calling. Over the years, she advanced through the organization, ultimately being named Executive Director in 2020. In that role, she led GRADD through a period of continued growth while maintaining the organization’s strong regional partnerships and mission-driven focus.
