Well-being for All: Resilience Through Intentionality

Being a caring and compassionate educator doesn't mean lowering expectations. On the contrary, holding students to high standards and encouraging them to reach their full potential is an essential part of supporting their growth. Dr. Michael Ungar's research on resilience highlights that structure, clear expectations, and consistent consequences are just as important as emotional support (see video below). These elements help children develop the strength and skills they need to thrive.
Our understanding of resilience is deepened by the insights in The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, which suggest that shielding children from consequences, discomfort, and challenges may actually be contributing to the rise in anxiety among young people.
Fostering resilience through intentional strategies is a central part to the CARER model that we have taught and implemented at many schools. This includes targeted resilience builders which encourage taking risks, learning through failure, coping with fear and rising to meet challenges. Learn more about this model here.
