CARER Framework

Featured: Authentic Connection

As we welcome students and educators back to school, here are some quick strategies for building authentic connection in the classroom.

  1. Ask students to brainstorm a list of adjectives that describe the ideal learning environment for them. Turn those into a set of shared classroom norms. Students are less likely to power struggle over rules and norms if they feel that they had a hand in creating them.
  2. Ask students to journal about the biggest "Yays and Yucks" that they anticipate this school year. Normalize any anxiety over new challenges and let them know that you will get through them together.
  3. Engage students in the layout and design of classroom including grouping desks rather than straight rows when possible. Add spaces for group work and quiet spaces for self-regulation. Develop clear procedure that encourages appropriate use of these spaces.
  4. Complete "getting to know you" surveys so that student know you that you care about them as a person and as a learner.
  5. Engage in activities that identify commonalities among students but also value differences. Download the activity below*.
*This download contains activities to support the discussion of commonalities and differences among students as a way to support the growth of classroom community.
4 Lessons included -K-2nd; 3rd-5th, MS and HS.
