Dr. Martinette Horner, Senior Director of the NC Center for Resilience & Learning
We are thrilled to introduce Dr. Martinette Horner as our new Senior Director at the NC Center for Resilience & Learning!
Dr. Horner brings with her 30 years of experience as an educator in North Carolina. She has taught everyone from third and fourth graders to doctoral candidates at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her commitment to public education brings her to the Center for Resilience and Learning, as she is deeply committed to increasing the capacity of those who work directly with the very future of our state---NC's children! Her career spans the full P–20 education continuum—from classroom teaching and school administration to university faculty work, educator preparation, statewide partnerships, and educational leadership development. Dr. Horner began her North Carolina education career in Orange County Schools, after earning a B.A. in Education from UNC–Chapel Hill as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow. She served as a school administrator after teaching before moving into higher education at UNC–Chapel Hill, where she has spent more than a decade preparing educators and educational leaders. She most recently directed UNC's Master of School Administration (MSA) program, where she worked with aspiring school leaders. In addition to supporting principal preparation and leadership development, Dr. Horner once served as the Regional Director for the NC New Teacher Support team at Chapel Hill, a model that makes the work of the Resilience and Learning team feel quite familiar. Dr. Horner looks forward to supporting team members as they help schools build resilient communities of practice for our state's most valuable asset.
| | | | CORE Collaborative Fellows 26-27 Kick-Off! | | |
Our first CORE Collaborative Fellows session was an incredible start to this journey! We brought together 22 passionate educators from across North Carolina who are committed to learning, connecting, and creating meaningful change in their schools and communities.
From building relationships to exploring trauma-informed practices, our Fellows leaned into courageous conversations, collaboration, and new ways of thinking about the work. We are excited to continue this journey together as we build 22 change agents across the state of North Carolina, educators equipped to lead with empathy, take action, and create sustainable change in their schools.
This is just the beginning, and we cannot wait to see where our Fellows take it!
| | ANCHOR Cohort 26-27 Kick-Off | | |
The ANCHOR principal professional development and coaching program kicked off in Cary, NC, with seven principals from across North Carolina. The program builds leadership capacity through six key pillars: Awareness, Nurturing, Connection, Hope, Ownership, and Resilience.
During our time together, leaders explored how trauma, stress, and neuroplasticity shape leadership mindsets while aligning their core personal values to student and school success. The kickoff balanced deep reflection with storytelling and connection. Up next, participants will complete six individual coaching sessions and a second in-person workshop to deepen strategies and keep their leadership anchored.

How a federal grant brought mental health services into schools across 6 North Carolina school districts
“Truly what I love about this work is it’s changing systems,” said Austin of the state policy. “(There are) some things that sound really simple, but once they’re in place, it just makes it a lot easier to do the work.”
Policy change is happening within districts, too. In 2022, three new school districts — Jackson, Nash, and Sampson — joined as Project AWARE pilot sites after North Carolina received a second round of five-year SAMHSA grant funding.

As part of the “I’ve Got Your Back” initiative, CMS students have the ability to receive mental health support from the district. Student ambassadors can also give their view on what students need, helping strengthen the support available to them.
The district is seeking proposals from community organizations that can provide additional mental-health support to students and families.
