President's Message

Smart HR doesn’t just react—it prepares, protects, and leads.

In today’s environment, staying ahead isn’t optional. The decisions we make every day impact our people, our organizations, and the level of risk we carry. Being proactive—grounded in knowledge and confident in our approach—is what sets strong HR leaders apart.

That’s what makes our HR & Employment Law Update such an important session. The legal landscape continues to evolve, and this is your opportunity to stay informed, ask the right questions, and walk away ready to apply what you’ve learned. Expect a high-energy, engaging experience designed to keep you sharp.

We’re especially grateful to McGraw Morris Masud, our Platinum sponsor and featured speakers for this event, along with our Resource Partners and event sponsors whose continued support helps make these opportunities possible.

Our Annual Silent Auction will take place alongside the seminar, supporting the SHRM Foundation and VSHRM scholarships. If you’ve been thinking about contributing, it’s not too late—check out the flyer below to see featured items and ways to get involved.

Coming up in June, Andre Young takes the stage for a standout event as we head into summer. Attendees will receive a signed copy of his book—something you’ll take with you long after the session ends. Be sure to save the date—June 9—from 11:15 AM – 1:15 PM at Horizons in Saginaw.

As we head into spring, we hope to see you there—continuing to grow, stay informed, and lead with confidence.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT

Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has launched a Youth Workers’ Rights Initiative to help young people enter the workforce safely, confidently and fairly.

The initiative provides new online resources that educate youth on workplace safety, labor rights and how to report violations. The effort combines guidance from MIOSHA on identifying hazards and preventing injuries, and from LEO’s Wage and Hour Division on work hours, job restrictions and wage protections.

By focusing on early education, outreach and partnerships with schools and community organizations, Michigan aims to prevent workplace injuries and violations while building a more informed, equitable and respectful future workforce.

NO TAX ON TIPS

Treasury Publishes Final Rules Listing Occupations that Qualify for No Tax on Tips Deduction and Provides Additional Guidance on Qualified Tips

The U.S. Department of the Treasury (Treasury) has finalized regulations under the new “No Tax on Tips” deduction, identifying which occupations are eligible for the new deduction because they customarily and regularly received tips as of December 31, 2024, and defining “qualified tips.” The Listed Occupations include corresponding Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes (TTOCs) which employers must report on 2026 tax forms. The tax regulations do not alter the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) wage and hour rules or tip credit eligibility.

COLLEGE RELATION NEWS

VSHRM Support Leads to Summer HR Internship

Did you know that VSHRM supports local college students in more ways than one - through scholarships and professional development opportunities!

Last fall, VSHRM generously sponsored the CMU SHRM Student Chapter members who participated in both the HR Games and the SHRM Michigan annual conference.

One of the CMU student team members, Caroline Kitts, an HR major from Traverse City, participated in HR Games with her team of Chippewas and was able to network with a SHRM professional chapter volunteer, Catherine (Caiti) Anthony, HR Coordinator at Great Lakes Potato Chips.

A simple conversation turned into a job interview and that turned into a great opportunity for Caroline to have a summer internship in HR at Great Lakes Potato Chips. Caroline is looking forward to working with Caiti and participating in the Michigan Career Educator and Employer Alliance this summer.
