News & Updates | August 2024

Dear Friends,

As we edge closer to fall, Ignatian Maine prepares to lead another cohort of pilgrims through the Spiritual Exercises as a Retreat in Everyday Life (RIEL). On a practical level, the retreat is divided into 4 parts, called “weeks.” As you move through these weeks, you will read and meditate on scripture, practice different types of prayer, talk through your journey with a spiritual director and share your experience with others. On a personal level, the experience is very individual. This month, we hear from Spike Brimmer (RIEL 2023-4) on what the retreat meant to him:

The Retreat Within Me

Spike Brimmer

“Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans,” according to a famous

quote that dates to the 1950s. While I was making plans to participate in and

experience the recent Retreat in Everyday Life, the retreat was changing my life from

the inside out.

As I wound my way through the retreat, I was most impacted by the time I spent

slogging along with the suffering Jesus. The immensity of His love for all mankind, and

for me personally, was manifest in the tortuous agony and ignoble death that He was

willing to undergo. Moment by moment, I came to understand more deeply that Love is

the true name of God. Love is the Alpha, the Omega and all the In Between.

Questions roiled inside me. How do I respond to this unsurpassable love? What do I

do now?

Once I stayed still long enough to give the Holy Spirit the opportunity to answer me, I

learned that I was asking the wrong question. Instead of “What do I do now?” my

immediate question needed to be, “Who am I becoming?”

The love of God, which was so manifest in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, was

changing me fundamentally. The only appropriate answer to the Love I experienced

was for me to become that Love as best as I could humanly do, and to share Love with

others.

I am transformed by Love, so to become Love to those who desperately need it. They

are friends, neighbors, strangers and enemies. They are everywhere I look, as far as I

can see.

The questions are becoming clearer. More answers will follow, If I but quiet myself and

listen for them.

Many thanks to Spike for his willingness to share. Know that the retreat is different for each person. If you’ve completed the retreat, maybe you can share your own experience with someone who might be interested along with this newsletter and a link to the Ignatian Maine site.

If the RIEL does not fit your schedule this year, take a look at some of our shorter programs. Learn more about all of these experiences below.

Praying that we all stay open to whatever God has in store just for us,

Jennifer Hansen, Ignatian Maine Leadership Team

Upcoming Programs

Ignatius was aware that not everyone can take 30 days away. He encouraged adapting the Exercises to a person’s situation. The 9-month Retreat in Everyday Life is one of those adaptations. Applications for this year’s retreat are now being accepted.

In addition, this fall, you can get a taste of the Exercises through On Retreat With Pope Francis, led by Paul Sullivan SJ and John Micalowski SJ.

Ignatius felt that spiritual companionship is also essential to the journey, and you can sample that and some Ignatian themes of relationship, longing, and calling through Sr. Ann Boyle’s small faith sharing group. This year the book is the Inner Chapel: Embracing the Promises of God.

Where is God calling you?

Group Spiritual Direction Shaped by Ignatian Practices

If you desire to continue the discernment of spirits that began during your Ignatian Retreat, if you feel ready to open your spiritual journey to the prayerful response of others, and if you are prepared to accompany others in their spiritual journey through reflective listening and responding, you may wish to join this spiritual direction group.

This group is designed for people who have prayed the Spiritual Exercises in any format. It is also for people who have experience in small faith-sharing groups and/or spiritual direction. Some familiarity with Ignatian spirituality centered in “finding God in all things” will be very helpful.

The group will meet

  • on the 3rd Monday of each month from October 2024 through June 2025,
  • from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM,
  • on Zoom.

This group is limited to 4 participants. Participants are expected to commit to attending all meetings throughout the year, so that members can get to know one another and build trust. Cost is $200, with scholarships are available.

Merle Marie Troeger will be the spiritual director.

Journeying Together

Together we share a gospel passage or prayer or poem or painting; after some time for reflection, everyone is invited to share what we notice, wonder & appreciate. As we practice listening to each other, we will also reflect on what happened in the group and “gather the graces” by sharing what our time together has meant.

3rd Wednesday of the Month (beginning September 18, 2024)

7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

ONLINE via Zoom

Jennifer Hansen will be the facilitator.

Spiritual Exercises as a Retreat in Everyday Life

You are invited to a Retreat in Everyday Life! Over a period of 9 months, you will be led through a series of prayers, meditations and reflections known as “the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.” On your own, you spend time contemplating various aspects of your own life and the life of Jesus. Together with other pilgrims, you share your journey, encouraging each other along the way. It's an adventure, one which is unique to each person.

The retreat includes:

  • Materials for daily prayer & reflection, the crux of the retreat
  • Group meetings online from 6:30 - 8:30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month from October 2024 through June 2025.
  • Monthly meetings (either one-on-one or in a small group) with a spiritual guide.

Applications are being accepted through early September, or until the retreat is full. Learn more and apply at IgnatianME.org.

Have you already completed the retreat? Is there someone you might invite to consider the exercises themselves? Sharing your story (and a link to our website) is the best recommendation!

Share Your Story: What has the Retreat in Everyday Life meant to you?

Whether it has been one year or five years since you participated in Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises as a Retreat in Everyday Life, take a moment to reflect back and consider what the RIEL has meant for you! What was your experience? Has it helped you grow in faith? Has it helped you grow in relationship with God/Jesus/Holy Spirit? Has it led you to a new type of prayer? If someone asked you about the retreat, what one thing would you share with them?

Share your answers with us HERE. We look forward to hearing from you!

Resources

Pray with the Imagination Start with a Gospel. Read in small bits, one story at a time. Place yourself in the scene. Imagine the sights, sounds, smells. What do you notice? Wonder? Appreciate? What is God saying to you through the story today?

Pray the Examen This is a good go to prayer. Take 5-15 minutes and review your day. Where did you see God? Where did you draw closer? Where did you miss God’s presence? Where did you pull away?

Seek Spiritual Direction Ignatius accompanied many people through the Spiritual Exercises. One friend he worked with for 4 years before he even allowed him to take the Spiritual Exercises! Monthly meetings with someone who is trained in deep listening can work with you as you both listen for the Spirit in your life.

Make A Retreat God finds us in the silence, and sometimes we need to get away from it our daily lives to find that silence! There are retreat centers in the Northeast and around the country which offer both guided (with presentations of material for you to reflect on) and silent (which usually includes a daily meeting with a director). If you’ve never been on retreat before, start small!

Keep growing in relationship with God and others! Let the Spirit lead you. Check out offerings from Ignatian Maine and your local parish. Listen to a podcast. Gather some friends and read a book of the Bible together. Pick up a book from a spiritual writer. Where is your heart calling you?

If you know someone who might be interested in any of our offerings, please share!
