The Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian '88 Awarded Honorary Degree 
Degree awarded during annual alumni convocation

The Rev. Gary Commins '80 '01 presents the honorary degree to the Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian.
CDSP awarded an honorary degree to the Rev. Dr. Tim Vivian '88 at its annual alumni convocation on October 11.

Vivian, a retired Episcopal priest and professor emeritus of religious studies at California State University Bakersfield, holds bachelor, master's, and PhD degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as a master's degree from Cal Poly and an MDiv from CDSP.

In 2007, after a substantial majority of the clergy and laity of the Diocese of San Joaquin left the Episcopal Church in opposition to its inclusion of LGBT people, Vivian helped maintain the Episcopal Church's presence in the diocese and was appointed vicar of a new congregation, Grace Episcopal Church in Bakersfield, by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. When he retired at the end of 2017, the church had 200 members.

This year's Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission (APLM) Colloquium took place at CDSP on September 27. The presenter was Dr. Lim Swee Hong, the Deer Park Associate Professor of Sacred Music and the director of the Master of Sacred Music Program at Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, Canada. 

Dr. Jamie Apgar, a ssociate for music at All Souls Episcopal Parish in Berkeley, offered the response.

On September 22, Bishop Mariann Budde ordained twelve deacons in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. Thanks to the diocese's partnership with CDSP, all of the new deacons participated in online classes through the CALL program as an integral part of their diaconal formation.

Canon Stephanie Spellers Visits CDSP Campus


The Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers, canon to the Presiding Bishop for evangelism, reconciliation and stewardship of creation, was on campus September 11 to speak to students about the Way of Love. The group recorded a short Facebook video message for Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.
Give to the Baskerville-Burrows Scholarship 
New fund to benefit black and Native American students at CDSP

At General Convention in July, CDSP announced the creation of the Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows Scholarship Fund. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and House of Deputies President Gay Jennings made lead gifts to the fund, which will benefit black and Native American students at CDSP.
 
Baskerville-Burrows, who earned her MDiv at CDSP in 1997 and served for two years as director of alumni/ae and church relations, made history in 2017 when she became the Episcopal Church's first black female diocesan bishop.

If you're in the discernment process as an aspirant or exploring your faith and ministry as a lay leader, join us for SeeCDSP to experience campus and seminary life with other prospective CDSP students. Choose from two sessions:
  • February 20-22, 2019
  • March 6-8, 2019
During SeeCDSP, you can attend classes, join the community for our regularly scheduled common worship in All Saints Chapel (Morning Prayer, mid-day Eucharist, Evening Prayer), experience Thursday Community Nights with evening Eucharist, dinner, and conversation, and explore the richness of life in the Graduate Theological Union and Berkeley.

Community News

On September 21, CDSP students, faculty and staff enjoyed a night out watching the Oakland Athletics play the Minnesota Twins. It was the first American sports experience for Mirfield exchange student Lois Ward.

Phil Hooper  '19 attended the annual gathering of the Society of Catholic Priests in New York City. He was interviewed by SCP communications director Charles Everson. Watch the interview.

Alumni News

A sermon by  David Carlisle '18 was selected for publication in the Episcopal Preaching Foundation's Preaching Excellence Program 2018 Book of Sermons.

Elizabeth Riley '13 has accepted a call as rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Mercer Island, Washington. Read more

John Reardon CAS '17 has accepted a call as vicar of St. James Episcopal Church in North Providence, Rhode Island. Read more

In Memoriam
Christopher Putnam MTS '11 died September 15. " He was a dear friend to many of us, he loved the CDSP community, and he was always eager to support us when he could. He last accompanied us during the summer intensive liturgies," the Very Rev. Mark Richardson wrote. "We give thanks for his life and ministry and ask God's presence especially among those who mourn this day." A memorial service will be held November 3 at 1 p.m. at All Souls Episcopal Parish in Berkeley.

Nancy Kaehr died October 4. Kaehr was a long-time friend of CDSP. A  memorial service will be held November 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Cathedral in San Diego. CDSP President and Dean Mark Richardson will preach. 

Anne Vance, who received an honorary degree from CDSP in 1997, died September 24. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Alban's Church in Tucson on November 3 at 10 a.m. Read the obituary.
