June 20, 2022
Dear friends,
With sadness, we write to let you know that Westminster’s Pastor Emeritus, the Reverend Haywood D. Holderness, Jr, died on Saturday, June 18.
Haywood served as pastor of Westminster from January 1, 1974, until his retirement on June 30, 2006. During his time here, the congregation more than doubled and the church campus expanded by the addition of land, the building of our present Sanctuary, the Calhoon Cabin, and major renovations and expansions to the Mission Center and Calhoon Cabin. But beyond that, it was his commitment to the broader community that made Haywood special. He knew that Christ called all people to love and serve their neighbors, and he was relentless in calling the church to do so. The Mission Center was renamed in his honor on July 1, 2006. You might enjoy reading the resolution passed by the Session upon his retirement
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 2:00pm. Immediately afterward, the family will receive guests in the Fellowship Hall. The service will also be live-streamed on our YouTube channel
In lieu of flowers, Haywood requested that memorial gifts be given to the church to support Westminster’s community partners. Memorial gifts made to WPC will be invested in the church’s Holderness Fund, an endowment established in 2000 that supports local mission work in Durham. Checks should be made payable to Westminster Presbyterian Church with “Holderness memorial gift” in the memo line.
Please join us in praying for Haywood's wife Mary, sons Dail and Penn, their wonderful extended family, and all of us who loved him. This is a sad day, and it will be a gift to gather together for worship with you on Saturday.
In Christ,
The Rev. Chris Tuttle
The Rev. Cheryl Barton Henry
The Rev. Alex Stayer-Brewington
