Our brand-new Lesser Slave Lake Métis District Wilderness Camp is getting ready for its very first summer season, and we invite our Citizens to help us bring it to life.

Join us for our Camp Work Bee as we come together to give our new camp a little TLC and prepare the land for laughter, learning, and community gatherings all summer long. This is a chance to roll up our sleeves, connect with one another, and take pride in building something meaningful for our families and future generations.

Located on the beautiful shores of Marten Lake, which is about 90 km Northeast of Slave Lake. This special place has already held many meaningful memories as the home of our Youth Culture Camp for many summers.

Now, we are honoured to open this space in a new way as a place for land-based learning, connection, culture, and community. Being situated close to the lake and in the middle of the boreal forest, the camp provides the perfect setting for swimming, canoeing, fishing, trail walking, gathering, and spending time together on the land. 🌊🪶

The new Wilderness Camp includes:

🏕️ 8 Cabins (sleeps 4 each)

🛖 1 Group Cabin (sleeps 16)

🍳 A Kitchen

🍽️ A Mess Hall

📚 A Classroom

🌲 Outhouses

💧Shower House

🥾 Trails and more

This camp is more than a new space... it is a place for stories, teachings, laughter, learning, and memories that will carry forward for generations. We are so excited to welcome our Citizens and community to celebrate this beautiful milestone with us.

We are honoured to share that the 98th Annual Citizens’ Gathering (ACG) will be hosted right here in Slave Lake — and for the very first time ever, the gathering will be welcomed in our home community by the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Join us on Thursday, August 20, 2026 as we welcome Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government to our home territory with food, smiles, and community connection. Our LSLMD Citizen Representative, District Captain, District Councillors, team, and citizen volunteers will be serving up burgers, hot dogs, salads, and plenty of warm hospitality. 🌭✨

We are honoured to feature Truly Creative Marketing (TCM), a proud Indigenous Métis-owned digital marketing agency rooted right here in Slave Lake. Founded by Marketing Specialist Chana Trudel, TCM is celebrating five years of empowering entrepreneurs, small businesses, and Indigenous organizations across our region. With over 15 years of hands-on experience in Alberta’s small businesses, Chana has become known as the “go-to” expert for marketing that feels clear, practical, and transparent.

Last month, TCM won the Excellence in Indigenous Business Award from the Slave Lake & District Chamber of Commerce. A powerful recognition of the impact they continue to make. The owner Chana is featured as Business Woman of the Month in Indigenous SME Magazine this June 2026 ✨

For the past 3.5 years, TCM has proudly served as our District’s social media managers, graphic designers, and email communications team. Behind many of the posts, visuals, and messages you see from us is the steady, thoughtful work of Chana and her team.

Chana and TCM serve as the Program Manager for LIFT: Learning Indigenous Financial Teachings, blending cultural knowledge with modern financial education to uplift Indigenous and Two-Spirit women. Chana has volunteered her time with our District teaching traditional Métis beading to our Citizens, healing art projects with our elders, and last year served as Secretary for Slave Lake Métis Local #19 before our governance transition. TCM has also volunteered time at the local high school to teach for the Entrepreneurship Class the last couple of years. Chana is now becoming an Indigenous role model speaker on marketing, decolonizing businesses, and overcoming adversity.

Through business and community leadership alike, TCM embodies what it means to grow in an Indigenous way — rooted in trust, creativity, culture, and lifting others as you rise. 🌿🪶

We honour the life and legacy of our beloved Elder, Pearl Sandor — a proud Métis woman, Knowledge Keeper, Residential School Survivor, artist, leader, advocate, and dear friend to our District. 💙♾️

On Saturday, May 27, 2026 we gathered with family and friends to bid farewell.

Pearl’s strength, advocacy for Truth and Reconciliation, cultural teachings, and gentle spirit have left a lasting imprint on our community. We are forever grateful for the time, wisdom, and love she shared with us. We honour her memory. We carry her teachings. And we will continue walking the path she helped light for future generations. 💙♾️

On May 5, 2026, our LSLMD team joined the community for the MMIW Walk, organized by the Slave Lake Friendship Centre. Together, we gathered at the Town of Slave Lake office at 11:30 am and walked in unity to the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre — carrying prayers, love, and the names of those who should still be here.

May 5, 2026, marked Red Dress Day, a National Day of Remembrance and Activism honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. We hung red dresses in silence and solidarity along Main Street to represent the lives taken too soon, for the families still seeking answers, and for the generations who deserve safety and justice. Each step we took was a promise: you are not forgotten. 💔♾️

We are grateful to come together in reflection and strength. It is in walking together that we show love, raise awareness, and continue the call for change. To the families and loved ones, we hold you in our hearts. To those we have lost, we carry your stories forward.

🤝💙 Walking Forward Together – Partnership Protocol Agreement Signed

On May 4, 2026, our District Captain Brenda Genaille, alongside Walter Andreeff, Consultation Coordinator for the Lesser Slave Lake Territory, travelled to Wabasca to meet with Cindy Moore, Citizen Representative of the Wabasca Desmarais Métis District (WDMD), and Diane Peredery, District Captain of WDMD.

During this meaningful visit, we proudly signed a renewed and amended Partnership Protocol Agreement on behalf of the Lesser Slave Lake Métis District 21 and the Wabasca Desmarais Métis District 22.

This agreement reaffirms our shared commitment to protecting Métis lands, rights, interests, claims, harvesting practices, traditional knowledge, sacred places, and our deep and enduring relationship to the land within both of our Districts. 🌿🪶

While a previous Consultation Agreement was in place, this renewal strengthens our dedication to working collaboratively with the Wabasca Desmarais Métis District. It reflects unity, respect, and our responsibility to safeguard what has been entrusted to us — for our Elders, our families, and the generations yet to come.

We are honoured to continue walking alongside our neighbouring District in protecting our shared Métis homeland. 💙♾️
