A home is more than just a roof over your head. A home should have basic amenities like a shower, internet, and accessible laundry. A home should be where you are living with loved ones and near friends. A home should enhance our mental and physical health. It is this standard of living all of us deserve.

The Right to an Adequate Standard of Living

Janice, a Stockton resident shares how a quality standard of living was never met no matter where she lived.

|
At just 18 years old, Janice, a Stockton resident, has experienced various living situations and faced a multitude of housing challenges. She learned that a home is more than just a roof over your head.
Janice explains how the laundry machines in her unit were shut down after certain hours, hard to reach, and closed for use during the COVID-19 pandemic. The staff of the apartment complex was hardly available and they only accepted money orders for rent, so Janice and her mom were always experiencing some type of stress.

The Right to a Standard of Living
|
"The right to an adequate standard of living requires, at a minimum, that everyone shall enjoy the necessary subsistence rights: adequate food and nutrition, clothing, housing and the necessary conditions of care when required. No one should have to live in conditions whereby the only way to satisfy their needs is by degrading themselves or depriving themselves of their basic freedoms."

“People are still struggling even as they’re getting into that $40,000 to $50,000 range,” Manzo said, but assistance “falls away before they reach a decent standard of living.” Housing costs are the primary burden for households who struggle to make ends meet, according to the report. About 4.1 million households spend more than 30% of their income on housing, a standard benchmark for affordability.
