President's Notes: 2021 Dare to Dream Workshop Fired Student Creativity |
The River Fund Maine recognizes that youth need more opportunities to see themselves as change-agents and to build community with others who are ready to step into the challenge of leadership in this complex world. The many hurdles faced by our community in a COVID-19 world revealed that youth are incredibly resourceful and capable problem solvers, and TRFM wanted to ensure that in a post-pandemic world they will be able to use these experiences to drive future innovations, not only for themselves but for their community at large.
The River Fund Maine's 2021 Dare to Dream Workshop held in February focused on imagining a post-COVID world and challenged each team to design a product or service to improve wellness across all ranges of ages and types of community members in the Bethel/Newry area.
Twenty students from Telstar and Gould formed four teams and, using the tools and techniques learned at the Workshop, developed thoughtful, original, and well-presented solutions. Listen to these students and you can never doubt the value of providing an opportunity for youth to deepen their community connections, to expand their creative horizons, and to grow self-confidence in their ability to face tough challenges fearlessly.

Executive Director's Notes: Live Auction, Master of the Mountain |
The days are getting longer, the snow is getting deeper, and the fun is just getting started at The River Fund Maine.
Starting March 7th and running through the 14th, TRFM is hosting its largest auction to date. The virtual event, "Gala Goes Live Auction", will include our annual paddle raise, and hallmark packages like the VIP Ski Package at Sunday River which includes a Gold New England Pass, South Ridge Parking Pass, and South Ridge Locker. The auction also features new experiences like a farm to table dinner for four at Bethel’s newest culinary experience, La Ferme by Beth Walker. We’re expecting a high turnout, so remember to bid high and bid often!
Master of The Mountain is sure to be an epic challenge on Sunday, March 14th. Just as planned last year, the challenge begins before you hit the slopes. We're bringing back fundraising prizes and giveaways, with the top fundraiser locking in a Sunday River season pass. In addition to prizes for top fundraisers, the top competitor in the Elite Class coming closest to the ideal time(s) takes home the title and the jacket. Remember, at Augusta the Masters wear green; in Newry, we wear red.

In Luci's Words: The President's List, Basketball & Aspirations |
Hello to The River Fund Maine Community!
I am happy to announce that I met my goal for the first semester and made President’s List with a 3.9 GPA. After the holidays, I have made my transition back to Husson campus after an extended winter break. Starting my spring semester, I am taking 18 credits worth of courses and my basketball season is beginning.
My classes this semester are more related to my occupational therapy program, which makes me even more encouraged and engaged with my schoolwork. I will continue to push for the same goal as last semester, making President’s List, while I will strive to increase my GPA.
To start my basketball season off, unfortunately, I sprained my ankle a week before our first game. This caused me to have to cheer on my team from the bench, but I am recovering quickly.
I hope this semester will be just as successful as last, and I will continue to keep you updated!

Jean Benedict—an active Bethel resident with a distinguished background supporting youth, literacy, and wellness initiatives—immediately recognized the importance of this year’s Dare to Dream challenge. Asked about her experience as one of the judges faced with the difficult task of selecting the winning team, Jean replied, “The River Fund Maine’s first wellness challenge was a great way to reach young people of diverse backgrounds living in Bethel to focus on the importance of building community and equity through creative ideas and new approaches. Acting as a judge for this extraordinary initiative was a privilege that inspired me with hope for the leaders of the next generation.”
If you have the pleasure of meeting Jean—an avid skier and hiker—out on the trails be sure to ask her about her fascinating background as a global development economist for the United Nations or her deep commitment to growing Maine’s economy through innovation and entrepreneurship.
