'The Academy', as it has come to be known, will be located at 595 Dexter Road in Scottdale Pennsylvania. The Shallenberger Recreation Facility opened last year by new Riverhounds owner, Terry "Tuffy" Shallenberger will provide a fantastic training ground for the Riverhounds coaches.
One of Shallenberger's main goals in taking ownership of the Riverhounds group was to help foster elite soccer training opportunities for players from his hometown of Connellsville and all surrounding areas.
"The Riverhounds trainers are like nothing I have seen before in youth sports training, with current professional players from all around the world pouring their heart, soul, and expertise into teaching young players how to improve on and off the field. This is the spark that is needed to ignite the passion for soccer in this area," says Shallenberger of their new Academy's official launch.

The Riverhounds, who formed their Academy program in 2007, currently work with just over 900 players, year-round. The age range of these players is 3 to 17 years, with all age groups broken down into multiple 'tiers' based upon technical skill level as opposed to other, more synthetic factors more commonly used to judge players at the youngest ages, such as physical prowess or the number of goals scored in weekend youth soccer matches. The goal in forming the system six years ago was to help raise the technical competence of players in Western Pennsylvania, an area accustomed to competing in games yet deficient in skill. This past year, alone, the Riverhounds have seen a multitude of accomplishments directly related to the extraordinarily high skill level of its players. With two female players called into Under-15 US National Team Camp in Dallas, Texas earlier this Spring and a whopping 30 players (17 girls and 13 boys) recently invited into the US Soccer Training Centers in Ohio, The Riverhounds Academy is now recognized as THE destination for skillful players in this part of the country. Proving these players can perform on the field as well, the LadyHounds Under-15 girls team also went on to win a US Club Soccer National Championship in its first year of competition, proving the future is bright for well-trained players who commit to playing the game the right way. |

Frequently Asked Questions

 |
How long does the winter program run?
The Academy session will stretch from the beginning of November through the first week of March, with a break over the holidays. In total, this stretch is approximately 18 weeks, during which your child(ren) would participate in 12-16 sessions, depending on the grouping.

I live in closer proximity to the Connellsville location than the Greentree location. Where should my child(ren) plan to attend Academy sessions this winter?
Ultimately, this is up to your family. After all, you are the customer and the Riverhounds are serving your needs. The Riverhounds certainly understand and appreciate the time and energy put forth in commuting to and from Academy sessions. This new Academy location is an attempt to help ease the transportation burden for many families, while also serving soccer communities which have not, to this point, been able to enjoy consistent, elite skills training. However, it should be noted that proper, technical development is best accomplished in a setting with players of similar abilities. This enables the coaching staff to apply appropriate pressure, working to elevate the level of the entire group through attention to individuals of a similar soccer aptitude. The Greentree location has been operating successfully for nearly seven years, thereby gathering a large player pool which has been broken down according to technical development. If your child is currently in a very competitive grouping within The Academy in Greentree, not reserved for just the RDA level, it is highly encouraged that you maintain your involvement in that particular group. We do believe The Academy at Connellsville will quickly establish a strong player pool, based upon strong incoming demand. Over time, this will create a tremendous working environment for elite players at both locations, concurrently.

|
What is the average class size?
On average, The Riverhounds Academy groups at the Greentree SportsPlex work with 18-22 players, led by 2-4 coaches depending on the specific needs of the group. We focus heavily upon an attention to details through repetition and reinforcement as well as a highly professional environment that breeds accountability, respect, and pressure. Make no mistake, your child(ren), regardless of the age, will be treated like a professional. We do not believe in watered-down training sessions with upwards of 50 or even 60 players on the field at the same time. In such situations, players can very easily 'hide' from their deficiencies, and will therefore, never improve. Just as a diamond is created by way of pressure, the Riverhounds coaching staff will create an environment that demands total focus and unwavering respect for the work that is required of a professional soccer player. This is not for everyone - it is for those who want to be the best and want to understand what it takes to get there.

If my child enters The Riverhounds Academy at Connellsville and performs at a very high level, will he or she have an opportunity to be recommended into the Riverhounds Development Academy (RDA) program?
Yes, any player within The Academy system is available for invitation into any and all Riverhounds-related activities, such as RDA events. The RDA program is the top level of our Academy, from age 9/10 and up. Based upon the age level, RDA teams may compete in anywhere from 2 to 10 events per year, including friendlies against top regional opponents, tournaments, showcase events, and leagues. There will always be direct communication with Connellsville Academy Director, Sterling Flunder, and both Scott Gibson (Academy Director) and Jason Kutney (Director of Youth Development) will be involved with sessions at Connellsville as part of player assessments.
|
|
What does my child need to bring to Academy sessions?
Each registered Academy player will receive a Riverhounds Academy training kit from Nike (Shirt, Shorts, Socks). You will have the opportunity to select your uniform sizing upon registration. The Riverhounds will have all necessary equipment on site (inflated soccer balls, discs, goals, etc). Each Academy player is asked to arrive at their session on time, in full uniform with shirt tucked in, wearing shin guards and cleats. If the cleats have dried mud/grass on them, it is required that the shoes are cleaned prior to entering the training facility. Please be sure to send your child with water or a sports drink for proper hydration during and after these intense sessions.
|
|
Are sibling discounts available?
Yes, all applicable discounts will be posted on the registration page atwww.riverhounds.com. All conversations regarding financial commitments will be completely private and can be discussed with the Director of Academy Communications, Amy Wisniowski.

My child already plays for a Cup team which practices over the winter. Can we also participate in The Riverhounds Academy?
Yes, approximately 85% of our current Academy players are registered with local Cup programs. The decision to train within The Riverhounds Academy is one that focuses upon providing your child(re) with professional resources for improvement. This is a decision that every parent should always be free to make, without being restricted or limited by other coaches, administrators, etc. Sadly, there are situations where coaches and administrators do try to prevent involvement with the Riverhounds. While we believe this to be counter-productive, we understand that this is reality. The player's improvement through our Academy will ultimately benefit his or her Cup team - and our focus is on the child.

We have several teammates who want to join The Academy but have heard that these players might be split up. Can you explain?
In this first winter program, it is likely that teammates would have the ability to remain together in a training group. This was the case with The Riverhounds Academy in Greentree as well, back in 2007/8. However, it is vital to note that The Riverhounds Academy is a program dedicated to the individual players. When you register for our Academy, you register your individual child(re) with an understanding that we are training that child, assessing that child, and pushing that child to his or her fullest potential. As the numbers in The Academy grow, player assessments (by way of structured evaluations) will be used to place players in appropriate Academy groupings. Our Academy in Greentree currently manages anywhere from 3 to 6 tiers per age group, with players positioned according to where the Riverhounds staff sees them, developmentally. Therefore, playing on the same team outside of Riverhounds does not influence our placement of the players. While we understand this could have an impact on carpooling, we do not permit such factors to adulterate the process of player development.
|
When players are grouped according to their skill level, do they remain in that group for a full year?
No, this would be unfair to the player, to the group, and to the game. Being a professional means treating every training session like a tryout. Week in and week out, professional players arrive at training, knowing they are competing for their jobs. As such, they are fully focused on enhancing their playing standard. Just the same, players in our Academy system must perform at high levels in order to remain within their group. If the coaches feel the player is experiencing a 'drop in form', there will be discussions with that player, and parent(s), notifying them that it may become necessary to move the player to a lower tier within The Academy. This may take place if a player is simply struggling with certain exercises for an extended period of time and that struggle is compounding, leading to a greater net effect on their game. In other cases, if a player is initially placed in lower tier but shows they are accelerating faster than others within that tier, the coaches may find it appropriate and necessary to move that player up to a higher grouping. Again, this would come through communication with the parents, as it would involve a different weekly schedule. It is most important to realize that youth development is a marathon and not a sprint. Having an Under 11/12 player reassigned to a lower tier because they are struggling through exercises in training does not mean that player has lost their college scholarship! Instead, it means we must slow things down a little bit in the short-term so that the child will be flying when it comes to the long-term. Being able to process that decision and manage that pressure is part of development - in many cases for the player and parent(s).
