January Club Meeting and Awards Night

April 2022 Club Meeting at Growler and Gill

Our first Club Meeting of the year is on Monday 23rd January, at Growler and Gill in Nanuet, beginning at 7:00. We'll recap an amazing comeback year for the club, present the 2022 RRR Annual Awards and look forward to the year ahead. Full details at the button below. Please RSVP if you know you are coming, but it's fine to show up at the door - the beer will not run out!

Club Meeting Details and RSVP

It was 40 years ago this month that founding President Pete Mastalli sent out the initial invitation to prospective members of the Rockland Lake Runners Association as the club was then called. By the end of that year, the club was official, with 50 paying members. Pete really started something - our membership is ten times that today - and we will be celebrating this anniversary all year. We have some ideas - commemorative clothing, a refresh of our signs and banners and a summer outdoor celebration - but we welcome your ideas as well. Just approach any board member, or e-mail us at [email protected]

Group Runs

We hold both weekly and monthly group runs

BRUN

Our weekly run, affectionately known as the #BRUN is held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM. We meet by the Gazebo at 282 S. Broadway in Nyack and head up the stairs to the shared use path across the bridge whose name elicits strong opinions.

This run, and I cannot emphasize this enough, is for everyone, regardless of whether you are fast or slow, or how far you can run. It's 7 miles to Westchester and back, but you can turn around at any point. The path is well lit, cleared of snow and monitored by security cameras. If you didn't already do so, sign up here so we can contact you.

Our monthly group run, held every Second Sunday at Rockland Lake is also for everyone, but is an especially good way for new members of the club to meet fellow runners and potential training partners. The "Fishing Station" parking lot (aka Parking Field #6) is the running hub of Rockland County, and you'll find local runners, many of whom are members of RRR, starting their runs there throughout the morning. The next run is Sunday, February 11th.

Our group run starts at 7:30 AM and makes one or two flat loops of the lake (3 or 6 miles). If you are training for something more ambitious, you can easily add on extra miles before or after the run.

All the details are at the separate sign up page for the monthly run.

Group Run

We've had a number of inquiries about the RRR Kids Program, last held in the Summer of 2019. This was a 6-week training program held at a local track in July and August, culminating in a 2-mile fun run at Rockland Lake.

We would love to be able to put on this program again, but there are number of hurdles to overcome before we can commit to something this ambitious. We need a facility, certified coaches and most important of all, lots and lots of volunteers. We will be sending out a survey in the next week or so to gauge interest and to see if we can get the necessary support. Please look out for it.

Holiday Party

It was great to see our annual Holiday Party back at full strength this year after two successive years of cancellations. There was lots of energy on the dance floor and in the Photo Booth (thanks Matt Ammer). Keep this in mind for next year - it's a lot of fun to meet your fellow runners all dressed up for a change and ready to party!

Snowflake 5k

This year, Rockland Road Runners took on a sixth race, the Snowflake 5K for Nyack Community Ambulance. This race, now in its 10th year, was initiated by long-time club member, Steve Borton, joined this year by co-race director, Tony Berman, so it is a natural fit for us. With the benefit of RRR's promotional efforts, the race had record participation.

The Snowflake has a relaxed end-of-year vibe, with a separate kids run and lots of families running together for the full course. Check out this short video of the kids race (they're so cute) and the mass start on YouTube.

Quick Hits

  • We were invited to join Rivertown Runners for their Jingle Bell Run in Rockefeller State Preserve on December 17th. Lots of RRR members showed up, with bells on, and we had a blast. This should become an annual tradition.
  • Another annual tradition is the Orangetown Santa Claus 5K, held this year on December 11th. RRR were well represented again, and seemed to have a runner on the podium for every age group!
  • Shout out to RRR and STAC's Kyle Kondracki for a sub-2:30 marathon at the California International Marathon on December 4th. That puts Kyle in a select group of Rockland runners who have ever hit that mark.
  • NYRR Races are well under way. Congratulations to those who participated in the Joe Kleinerman 10K and the Fred Lebow Half.
  • Whether you are running the 9+1 to qualify for the 2024 NYC marathon, racing to compete, or just running the occasional race for fun, please declare your Team Affiliation as Rockland RR. You should be able to do this in your NYRR profile settings.
  • If you wanted to run the sold out Washington Heights 5K, let us know. It's a club points race, so we may be able to add up to 4 club members who are affiliated with our club team.
