Greetings Members
Hello Fellow Members,

I hope this newsletter finds you and yours healthy during this Covid-19 pandemic. We have a small “bubble” with our youngest son Aaron, his wife Jennifer and our granddaughter Kaylee in Long Beach, CA. We visit them on Thursdays and on Fridays they come to our house in Mission Viejo.

Due to the pandemic, we’ve cancelled our 2020 rallies, and moved most of them to 2021. Please read the changed dates for these rallies outlined below.

Also due to the pandemic, we will be hosting Board Meetings and our Annual Meeting online via Zoom, and holding our elections this year electronically.
If you have an interest in any of these positions, or know of someone who is,
please contact Dave Shehane, the immediate past president, who is in charge of the
nominating committee.

According to our Chinook RV Club Officers Rotation Schedule, two positions are opening for anyone in the Club (except Associate Members) for a three year term - (2020-2023). Responsibilities are outlined below from our Bylaws:

Treasurer
The Treasurer shall keep accurate records of the Club's finances. The Treasurer shall present a Treasurer's Report at the Annual Meeting, as well as a Year-end Treasurer's Report within 30 days of the close of the Club's Fiscal Year.

Member-at-Large
The Member(s) at Large shall be available to carry out those tasks delegated by the
President and Board of Directors. Two Members at Large shall be elected to assure
appropriate member input at all board meetings and business meetings.

One Member-at-Large position is opening for the new term.
It’s my privilege to welcome the following new members. Thank you so very much for joining our club, and we hope to see you at future rallies!

  • John and Chris Van Mason - Richland, Washington
  • Bob Hill - Jefferson, Oregon
  • John and Michelle Forsman - Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Jim Robertson and Joann Schafer - Elk Grove, California
  • Bill and Jody Jory - Nevada City, California

Chinook RV Club Facebook Page
Our Facebook Page has gone incognito! But it is still there. Long story short, it was becoming painful to reject all the people who were trying to join our page! Even with the required question of “Are you a member of the Chinook RV Club?” most people never answered. People seemed to ignore the “Members only” criteria. Turned out that some were members of the Chinook Camping Club looking for their page. Well, I got to looking around and discovered that their page was “invisible” – that is why their members kept trying to join ours. So that solved the issue, and our page is now hidden just like theirs – not from members who use this handy link below to join! After you join, it is visible to you. Not a Facebook fan? Many of us are weary of the constant social media chaos and noise these days. Our Facebook page is a quiet place within that storm…no politics, no we/they, just plain Chinook talk among our members. So if you are interested, here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/961323693981878/

Our Google Folder and the Online Directories
Just a reminder that we keep our online directory up-to-date with the latest new member information. Our folder can be reached by going to: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16__s4Tej_fdDzbtR_sZ4hFSQWbDyAEQM?usp=sharing. There is a pdf copy of the latest update of our normal directory and the photo directory which is a Google Doc, updated every time we get a new photo contribution.

Please review the Photo Directory (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DGAk111HflrijxReXiOErxBSrzXVUv03qWtwwNrDOts/edit?usp=sharing) to be sure you have the latest and greatest photos of you, your partner, and your coach. No photo?? No problem.

Just email photos to me at dshehane@gmail.com, and I will insert them artistically into the directory. Send me an email if you have any questions.

Flash Rally Anyone?
Just because we aren't having any formal rallies for the rest of this year, that doesn't mean that a few of us can't get together, as long as we stay safe - hand sanitizer, hand washing, mask wearing, and socially distancing!

Let me know that you're going to an RV Park on certain dates, and I'll let the membership know in case anyone would like to join you. That's just about it. You don't have to organize anything, and everyone makes their own arrangements.
Travel Log
Want to share an interesting and fun Chinook travel experience? We often share these stories in small groups or one-on-one chats at the rallies, but not everyone gets to hear about our adventures. Now they can!

Forward your short write-ups on some of the great trips you've taken in your Chinooks to debbieshetland@gmail.com -- and don't forget some photos!
Favorite Campgrounds/RV Parks
If you're not up to writing an article for our Travel Log section, how about simply sharing your favorite campground/RV park? All you need is a link for the website and a maybe a sentence or two about why it's your favorite. Easy peasy!

Forward your favorite campground info to debbieshetland@gmail.com.
RV CAMPING - HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
Since we don't have a rally to recap in this issue, I thought it might be fun to review some camping history.
Here’s What RV Camping Looked Like
In an article published by Atlas Obscura in August of last year, the author offers a salute to the Tin Can Tourists—the DIY auto enthusiasts who started it all. It's an interesting article with some great old pictures. Check it out: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/heres-what-rv-camping-looked-like-100-years-ago.
The History of Tin Can Tourists
Now that I've got you interested, don't miss this great historical gem on the Tin Can Tourist website that was compiled in 1946: https://tincantourists.com/2818-2/.
Chinook History Since 1938

Third Generation

And, of course, you have to check out the complete history of Chinooks from the beginning in 1938 and see how they evolved over the years. It's a great story! https://tincantourists.com/wiki/chinook/

THE CHINOOK SONG (OPUS THREE)
By Al Enriquez 9/17/2003
(Sung to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey)
WE ARE HAPPY RV'ERS
WE SELDOM GET SHOOK
AND OF ALL OUR POSSESSIONS
WE LOVE OUR CHINOOK

WE TRAVEL THE HIGHWAYS
WITH NO CARES TO BEAR
WHEN WE STOP AND HOOK-UP
MOST PEOPLE STARE

THEY GATHER AROUND
TO ADMIRE OUR RIG
WE ASK THEM INSIDE
IF THEY'RE NOT TOO BIG

REFRAIN

WE'VE TRAVELED THE COUNTRY
AND WHEREVER WE ROAM
IN OUR TWENTY-ONE FOOTER
WE NEVER MISS HOME

WE GO EAST AND WEST
NORTH AND SOUTH TOO
WE FACE HILLS AND MOUNTAINS
THEY'RE EASY TO DO

WITH ONLY TWO SEATS
IT IS QUITE A THRILL
TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY
IF GRANDKIDS ARE STILL

TRAILWAGONS GO FORWARD
KEEP CHINOOKS WITH ZEST
FOR AS LONG AS WE'RE ABLE
WE'LL BE DRIVING THE BEST!

WE ARE HAPPY RV'ERS
WE SELDOM GET SHOOK
AND OF ALL OUR POSSESSIONS
WE LOVE OUR CHINOOK
