Something to Celebrate!
The miracles of Hanukah include turning something bad into good. In the midst of terrible defeat and destruction of our Temple, Jews found a small jar of oil for the menorah. It didn't seem enough to last for very long, but it lasted for eight days, long enough to procure more oil for our Ner Tamid, our everlasting light, that was lit in the Temple.
At Heilicher this year, we turned what is sometimes scary, an evacuation drill, into the formation of an all-school hanukiah (the menorah specific to Hanukah). Led by our eighth graders, our nine grades became the eight candles and shamash (lead candle), with Heilicher adults forming the base (how symbolic!). Eighth-grade students took aerial photos and videos with their drones, and you can see the photos of our First Annual Heilicher Hanukiah formation. Big thanks to Mike Madigan, leader of security, who supported this mash-up of activities, and many thanks to Amichai Davis, Ben Ribnick, and Benny Marmor, who brought their drones and great photography skills. One fourth grader, often overwhelmed by the security drills, mused aloud, "I can't wait till I'm in eighth grade and can be the drone captain!"
We capped off the activity by singing a few Hanukah songs in formation, though the drones did not hover close enough to pick up our singing. It's a good thing the holidays keep coming around so that we can work on our techniques.
We hope you had a holiday filled with light and love. Enjoy the videos from Hanukah candle lighting, and a big thank you to the Hebrew and Jewish Studies teachers for creating the fun videos.

COVID-19 Important Reminders!
COVID-19 rates remain high across Minnesota. Even as our students are now becoming vaccinated, we need to stay vigilant about preventing COVID-19 transmission.
Please remind your children to wear masks and practice physical distancing outside of school as they socialize with friends and engage in extracurricular activities, keep them home from school if they have signs of illness, and obtain a COVID-19 test if they have any potential symptoms. Please report any household COVID-19 diagnosis or exposure in the Heilicher Communication Center. These measures continue to be needed to keep our entire school community safe and healthy.
