Last week we learned from and made music with Billy Jonas!

Join Us at the Heilicher Annual Benefit

Together We Thrive.

When we set the theme for this year’s Heilicher Annual Benefit, we couldn’t have predicted how strongly that would resonate today. During this time of anxiety, grief, and increased antisemitism, Heilicher is a community where students feel supported in their full Jewish identities.

With disturbing occurrences at local schools and beyond, Jewish day schools have an essential role to play in our community's response, immediately and for the long term. We need to double down on an integrated Jewish education that sends forth informed, connected, and confident Jews into the world.

Come to our Annual Benefit on Sunday, November 19, and support a strong Jewish future. While honoring Judy and Jerel Shapiro, we will raise funds to support engaged learners and their lifelong bonds with Israel. Join us because together we thrive!

Torah Thoughts From Doc

Read a brief message about this week's Torah portion, Vayeira. “Morally speaking, there is no limit to the concern one must feel for the suffering of human beings.” — Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

Grades 6-7 Parent Meeting

Parents of students in sixth and seventh grade: Please come to a meeting with Heilicher’s leadership at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, in the Beit K’nesset to discuss an exciting plan for a new experiential learning capstone program in Israel education.

Quarterly PTO Meeting

Please join the Heilicher PTO 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, in the library for updates from the PTO and to schmooze and learn more about updates to Heilicher’s curriculum from Jackie Smith, director of general studies. Jackie will address questions you may have, such as:

  • How is my child learning to read here at Heilicher?
  • What is happening if they are excelling or struggling in reading or math?
  • Will my student be ready for high level math by high school?
  • Why is there so much in the news about reading?

Join us to discuss Heilicher's curricular programs and how they prepare all students for success in learning and life. Jackie will share the background and current state of literacy instruction in the U.S. and here at Heilicher. We will also share what parents can expect from the literacy program, especially in the K-5 setting, as we adopt two new literacy teaching models. We will also talk about math instruction and the pathways that we have for students to achieve at high levels at Heilicher and beyond.

Honoring Our Veterans

In observance of Veterans Day, we will honor veterans during Kabbalat Shabbat on November 10 at 2:15 p.m. We would like to invite any Heilicher family members who have served in the military to attend Kabbalat Shabbat services. Please fill out our veterans form if you are a veteran or on behalf of a veteran so we can include all of our veterans in our list and/or in person.

Arts Opportunity for Beth El's 100th Anniversary

Beth El Synagogue will celebrate its 100th anniversary in January with a community sing-along. Our Heilicher Choir will participate along with other choirs from the broader community. To make this event even more beautiful, our students have the opportunity to create artwork inspired by the songs. The plan is to have three-five illustrations for each of 15-20 songs to be projected during the event. All artwork will be turned over to Beth El. You do not need to be a Beth El member to participate.

On Sunday, November 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., students can come to the Heilicher art rooms to create a drawing. Space is limited; sign up for the Beth El Illustration Project. Parents, please plan to stay in the JCC while your child is participating. There will be a sign-in/sign-out sheet. If you would like to volunteer to assist, please contact Ms. Thor.

Empowering Young Minds: K-2 Parent Development Evening with Dr. Megan Helmen

Families of students in kindergarten through second grade are invited to a Heilicher Parent Development Evening featuring local neuropsychologist Dr. Megan Helmen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, in the auditorium. Dr. Helmen will share techniques for teaching your child to manage their emotions and behavior, based on their own unique strengths and personality. She will take questions after her talk, and Heilicher leaders will be present to share how we use these principles during the school day. RSVP. Childcare will be available — you must register.

Save the Date: Yom Dor l'Dor

Yom Dor l'Dor is Heilicher's grandparent and special elders day. Students' guests are invited for an afternoon of intergenerational programming and a preview of their work at school. The fall event will be Tuesday, November 21, at 12:30 p.m. Please share this information with your students’ grandparents/special elders. It has also been sent in our grandparent newsletter, Roots & Wings.
