Rosh Hashanah , Yom Kippur and Forgiveness

The Heilicher core value for September is Lo Alecha / לֹא עָלֶיךָ / It Is Not Entirely Upon You
לֹא עָלֶיךָ הַמְלָאכָה לִגְמֹר, וְלֹא אַתָּה בֶן חוֹרִים לְהִבָּטֵל מִמֶנָה (אבות ב:טז)
"It is not up to you to finish the job. Neither are you free to withdraw from it." (Avot 2:16)

People cannot do things completely on their own. We need to work together. Just because we think we cannot finish something, doesn't mean we should not start and try to complete the task.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At this time of year there is a lot of talk about asking forgiveness (slicha - סליחה).  Sometimes asking is easy, "Slicha (as in, sorry for interrupting you), but could I get through here?"  But particularly during the month of Tishrei we talk a lot about asking for forgiveness for the bigger things.  And perhaps some of us spend time doing the work of forgiveness (m'chila מחילה), but it seems to get a bit less attention.  This week at Heilicher many of us worked on the words of forgiveness using the following phrases, "I'm ready to forgive you," and, "I'm not ready to forgive you YET. Could we try again tomorrow?"  We practiced looking people in the eye, shaking hands, and choosing one of those phrases to say. Try it out. What do you notice? What happens?

G'mar Tov!  May you be inscribed for a good year.
