The Role of Psychoanalysis in Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy

Despite ongoing research, gradual legalization, and current legal use of medicines such as ketamine as adjunctive psychotherapeutic agents, psychoanalysis has been largely absent from treatment protocols as well as post medicine integration work. The recent APSA symposium focused on whether psychedelic medicine will eclipse the need for psychoanalytic treatment, rather than exploring the integration of these two powerful modalities. This course is designed as an introduction to general principals of psychedelic therapy. Using both experiential and didactic readings, we will examine how our skills as depth psychologists might enhance a psychedelic treatment; how a psychedelic treatment might enhance a psychoanalysis; and discuss what theoretical models and technical accommodations might maximize benefit and, as always, prevent harm to our patients. The primary focus of the course will be ketamine, as it is the only psychedelic medicine available legally in Massachusetts.
