Author Michael Golay talks about Lorena Hickok who, as the best known female journalist in America in 1933, traveled through parts of the US most affected by the Great Depression and reported her observations back to Eleanor Roosevelt.
During his far-flung wartime inspection tours, President Roosevelt often received models and other gifts from workers and staff in defense factories and military facilities. During the President’s April 30, 1943, inspection tour of Kentucky’s Fort Knox, Master Sergeant Ivan H. Howitz, gave FDR this model tank — a visual aid used at the base’s Armored Force School.
As the number and ferocity of wartime atrocities increased, Nazi crimes against humanity peaked in their campaign to destroy Europe’s Jewish population. An approach of isolating and dehumanizing Jews in Germany and its occupied territories fostered growing mob violence that laid the groundwork for mass murder.

By the end of 1940, Great Britain’s war effort against Germany had reached a point of crisis. On November 23, Britain’s ambassador to the U.S., Lord Lothian, arrived at New York’s La Guardia Airport where he held an impromptu press conference. “Well boys,” he announced to the assembled journalists, “Britain’s broke; it’s your money we want.”
