The Runkle Consulting Castle Crier

Dewey, Our Sound Engineer

This past month, we’ve done a somewhat over-the-top social media campaign about our mascot, Dewey. Dewey is an Eclectus parrot who turned 21 this month, so we’re

celebrating this date. He really didn’t have any relationship with the company until the Pandemic, before that, he was just a pet. However, with Zoom meetings from my home,

Dewey got involved in the business. During Zoom meetings, he would squawk really loud, so I would bring him in the meetings on my shoulder to keep him quiet. The unintended consequence was that he really enjoyed Zoom meetings.

So, since the Pandemic, any time I attend a Zoom or Teams meeting from home, Dewey is also in attendance. He’s become pretty popular with some of my clients, and some of them expect to see him. The team we work with in India is particularly fond of him. So, for this newsletter, I will talk a little bit about Dewey, and then we’ll go back to normal business.

Dewey was hatched in California in August of 2004, I don’t know what date it was. In February 2008, he was passed on to me by his previous owner. They found him a bit difficult to handle, parrots demand a lot of attention and are really noisy. Their squawks can be as loud as a gunshot – you can hear Dewey out in the street in front of our

house even though all the windows and doors are shut.

A few facts about Dewey:

1. He watches TV. He likes baseball and football.

2. He has temper tantrums when things don’t go his way. For example, he had a

temper tantrum when we turned on a baseball game on the TV, and it went to

commercial almost immediately after we turned it on.

3. He has a vocabulary of about 50 to 100 words. He uses words in the right

context.

4. He addresses my wife and I by our first names, which I still haven’t been able to

get used to. Something is very weird about being called by name by an animal.

5. He does not live in a cage. He has free range of the house (he is newspaper

trained).

Dewey will probably live a long life. The vet says he will probably live about 40 years, so

he may outlive me. Already having had him for 17 years makes him the longest-lived pet

I‘ve ever had. So, he’ll be happily attending Zoom meetings for the foreseeable future.
