Dear friends,
SACC-DC remains open for business and you can catch many of our services and activities on our website and social media. Be sure not to miss our webinar with AstraZeneca about their collaboration with the University of Oxford to develop a coronavirus vaccine, a collaboration you can read about in today’s
WSJ
.
Pharmaceuticals are among the many examples of Swedish industries undergirding business in our DMV region and Swedish-US trade at large. Maintaining trade and investment is crucial to provide access to essential goods including medical items and to limit the negative impact of the coronavirus on jobs and economic welfare.
With that, I hope that the July edition of the SACC-DC newsletter finds you well in either productive pursuit or with a beverage and a book – till then,
Karin Hammar
Executive Director
P.S. Please be on the lookout for our August Social Online Mixer with Special Guests with whom you can book exclusive Zoom hangouts!

Securitas
- On The Front Line Of COVID-19
|
|
COVID-19 is still rapidly changing the labour markets and continues to unemployment rates. While many companies have been forced to distribute furlough or lay off staff, Securitas has had to recruit thousands of new employees.
“Securitas has been innovated with requests since COVID started, we are at the front line protecting and preventing the spread of the virus in our client’s locations. Thus, as the largest Swedish company in terms of employees, people are at the core of what we do.”
–
Andrew Dunn, President of Mobile Guarding Division at Securitas North America
As the demand for Securitas services has increased in a world of heightened healthcare concerns, the firm has rapidly adopted new ways of protecting people and assets. For example. Securitas plays a major role in maintaining social distancing, controlling accesses, performing temperature reading and handling elevated emotions at the nation’s healthcare facilities.
Long-term though, Andrew foresees a transition into security digitalization and automatization from current very labour intensive services.
“The security industry is changing as a whole; we do not use the term security so much anymore. We call ourselves Intelligence Protective Services Partners. On sight guarding is now beginning to shift more to detection and analytics technology”
Andrew believes that Artificial Intelligence will play a big role in this shift. With over 86 years’ worth of of security data in its systems, AI is the natural way to analyse and capitalize on the wealth of information. The available data helps to predict the seasonality of criminal activities. Securitas knows for instance that certain crimes are more likely to occur during the winter while others tend to occur in the summer season. By analysing the data, they can narrow down the indicative information which zip code, days of the week and times of the day the crime under consideration is expected to take place. Precise data means not only accurate security interventions, but also cost-effective services.
With new technology, Securitas is on the lookout for updated skills and inquisitive mindsets in future recruits. They are looking for people who are tech savvy and knows how to work and operate smart devices and Similarly, diverse educational and cultural backgrounds are imperative for a good read of the data available to us as we anticipate and respond to security breaches, says Andrew.
