Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., with more than 9,500 new cases diagnosed every day. The good news is that skin cancer is largely preventable, and early detection can save lives.

At Pima Dermatology, we offer comprehensive care, including expert skin cancer diagnosis, treatment, and Mohs surgery, led by Dr. Sarah Schram, a skilled Mohs surgeon and co-owner of the practice. Mohs surgery is a precise, tissue-sparing procedure that ensures the highest level of care for skin cancer removal.

This May, in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it's the perfect time to take action to protect your skin and raise awareness about the importance of sun safety and regular skin checks.

Key Ways to Protect Your Skin:

1. Wear Sunscreen Every Day: No matter your age, skin type, or weather, sunscreen is essential. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) daily, even on cloudy days, to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, which increase your risk of skin cancer.
2. Seek Shade: Stay in the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. When outdoors, seek shelter whenever possible to limit your exposure to harmful UV radiation.
3. Slip! Slop! Slap!® ... and Wrap: Slip on a shirt to cover your skin. Slop on sunscreen to protect exposed areas. Slap on a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face. Wrap on sunglasses to protect your eyes and the skin around them.
4. Avoid Tanning Beds: Tanning beds and sunlamps emit harmful UV radiation, which increases the risk of skin cancer. Instead of using tanning beds, consider safer alternatives, such as sunless tanning products.
5. Protect Children: Children’s skin is especially sensitive to UV rays. Be sure to apply sunscreen, like EltaMD UV Pure, have them wear protective hats and sunglasses, and encourage them to seek shade when outside.
6. Watch for Abnormal Moles: Check your skin regularly for any changes, particularly new or unusual moles. Early detection is key to successful skin cancer treatment, so don’t skip your annual skin check with your dermatologist.

Know the ABCDEs of Melanoma: When checking your skin, look for the following signs of melanoma:

• Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.
• Border irregularity: The edges of the mole are uneven or blurred.
• Color changes: The mole has uneven coloring.
• Diameter: The mole is larger than the size of a pencil eraser.
• Evolution: The mole changes in size, shape, or color over time.
