2023 Health Research Conference!


WE-SPARK's 2nd annual Health Research Conference is scheduled for Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Caesars Windsor.


This event will bring together an esteemed gathering of researchers, health care professionals, students, and community partners, representing diverse health research areas. We are no longer accepting abstract submissions, but there is still time to register to attend the conference. We hope to see you there!

Jalal Ahamed, University of Windsor. ($190,000) NSERC. Development of high precision and highly stable micro inertial sensing systems.


Amit Bagga, Windsor Regional Hospital ($10,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund. Evaluation of a continuous glucose sensor in patients with diabetes on hemodialysis.


Tricia Carmichael, University of Windsor. ($150,000) NSERC. Urgently needed physical vapor deposition system for organic and wearable electronics.


Brian DeVeale, University of Windsor. ($165,000 and $12,500) NSERC. Dissecting microRNA function in early mammalian development.


Brian DeVeale, University of Windsor ($25,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Katelyn Bedard Bone Marrow Association. Defining relative cell cycle lengths in mixed cell populations.


Arezoo Emadi, University of Windsor. ($210,000) NSERC. A new approach in extending the boundaries of autonomous early detection using a novel micromachined resonator.


Caroline Hamm, Windsor Regional Hospital ($10,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by WE-SPARK Health Institute. Expansion of the Clinical Trials Navigator (CTN) program with staged introduction of the navigator program to demonstrate benefit to availability of the CTN program.


Mason Leschyna, Erie Shores HealthCare ($10,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by WE-SPARK Health Institute. Effectiveness of Ontario Naloxone program.


Drew Marquardt, University of Windsor. ($160,000) NSERC. Investigation of the molecular interactions of vitamin E with cellular membranes: Towards solving a 100-year-old mystery.


Dana Menard, University of Windsor ($20,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by the Macedonian church, WE-SPARK Health Institute, and the University of Windsor Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation. Sexual resilience and wellbeing in individuals with endometriosis.


Emma Mineau, St. Clair College ($20,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by WE-SPARK Health Institute. The evaluation and implementation of increased mental health resources, with minimized barriers, for patients of a local community hospital.


Syed Naqvi, Windsor Regional Hospital ($15,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. Automated detection of brain metastases using machine learning.


Sirayam Pandey, University of Windsor ($60,000). Mitacs-Accelerate grant. Evaluation of anticancer activity of Shogun black maitake mushroom extract and its interaction with chemotherapeutic drugs in in vitro and in vivo models of human cancer.


Melissa Pare, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare ($20,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by WE-SPARK Health Institute. Implementing rTMS programming at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare.


Steven Rehse, University of Windsor. ($160,000) NSERC. Spectroscopy of laser-induced plasmas: An interdisciplinary research program for the 21st century.


Kyle Shafer, Erie Shores HealthCare ($10,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by WE-SPARK Health Institute. Evaluating the association between travel burden and effective cancer care on overall survival and quality of life with novel chemotherapy satellite site.


Vijendra Sharma, University of Windsor ($20,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by University of Windsor Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation and Faculty of Science. Identification of cell-type-specific dysregulated mRNA translation in Alzheimer's disease.


Joanne Tay, University of Windsor ($30,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. Exploring the process of receiving pediatric cancer care in Windsor Essex region through the lived experiences of youths living with cancer, parents, and healthcare providers.


Yufeng Tong, University of Windsor ($30,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by University of Windsor Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation and Faculty of Science. Shed lights on SUN1 for cancer treatments.


John Trant, University of Windsor ($30,000). WE-SPARK Incentive Grant funded by University of Windsor Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation and WE-SPARK Health Institute. pHerapeutics: Modulating the tumour microenvironment restores immunosurveillance, eliminates cancer's "home-field" advantage, and potentiates therapies.


Jill Urbanic, University of Windsor ($20,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by University of Windsor Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation and Faculty of Engineering. Design, fabrication, and testing of 3D printed micro-fluidic devices for exploring the culture of human tumour-based organoids, and to alter the tumour microenvironment.


Paula van Wyk, University of Windsor ($20,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by University of Windsor Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation and Faculty of Human Kinetics. Isometric handgrip training study: answering the urgent call for black populations.


Nick Vukotic, University of Windsor ($30,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. Improving outcomes in glioblastoma treatment: implantable therapeutic polymer composites for targeted drug delivery.


Indryas Woldie, Windsor Regional Hospital ($15,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. A novel translational pipeline for the treatment of multiple myeloma.


Telford Yeung, Windsor Regional Hospital ($10,000). WE-SPARK Igniting Discovery Grant funded by Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund. Reducing contamination in umbilical cord blood cultures for the diagnosis of early onset neonatal sepsis at Windsor Regional Hospital: a prospective cohort quality improvement study.

Appointments and Awards


Natalie Adam, Nathan Brockenshire, Aarsh Makwana, Sabrina Sawan, and Ian Trepanier have all been awarded Co-op/Internship Rising Star Student Awards from the University of Windsor's Co-op and Internship Program.


Human Kinetics professor, Dave Andrews, and Faculty of Nursing professor, Kathy Pfaff, have been named the recipients of the 2023 University of Windsor Educational Leadership Award.


Anti-cancer student researchers, Hannah Drew, Karolina Konior, and Abby Raad, have placed among the top presenters at the Natural Health Product Research Society of Canada's annual conference.
