AT SPRINGFIELD’S UNION STATION
Springfield Technical Community College received $1.46 million in funding to open a Western Mass Cybersecurity Center of Excellence at Springfield Union Station.
The funding was announced at Springfield Union Station on Monday, Oct. 31, during a celebration with U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal and other dignitaries.
The facility – a security operations center and cyber range – will serve as a regional center for Western Massachusetts and beyond. "The Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CCE) will provide valuable hands-on training and a career start for students and could attract new people into cybersecurity as a profession" said STCC Vice President and Chief Information Officer Mary Kaselouskas. As it celebrates its 50th year, the Springfield Technical Community College Dental Hygiene program received a $12,500 donation for scholarships from Delta Dental, an insurance provider.
STCC President John B. Cook announced the donation in a ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the dental clinic in the Health Science Building at STCC with a representative of Delta Dental and STCC faculty and students.
Cook thanked Dennis Haglund, director of sales and client services, who attended and spoke at the ceremony.
“It’s wonderful to receive this gift from Delta,” said Cook, who noted that it’s expensive to support a clinical lab. The STCC clinic, which offers services to the public, includes chairs, dental tools, x-ray machines, patient simulators and other high-tech equipment.
Delta delivers care by providing insurance plans to employer groups and working with providers.

STCC INSPIRED EDUCATOR SHIRLEY ARRIAGA, A VETERAN AND CANDIDATE FOR STATE REP.
Springfield Technical Community College helped launch Shirley Arriaga dreams.
Arriaga ‘15, a political newcomer who in September won the Democratic nomination for state representative (8th Hampden District), returned to her alma mater on Oct. 12 to speak as part of the “We the Women” series, which celebrates achievements by female leaders.
“I am a planner, so education was always a top priority for me,” Arriaga said. “I planned to graduate high school, go to college, join the military and build my network and pursue a career in politics so I can help the greater good.”
Speaking to an audience in the Student Learning Commons Forum, Arriaga said her educational journey started at STCC.
“It has taken me very far, and I am not done yet,” she said. “I take (education) seriously and I hope I can inspire others to invest in themselves.”
Raised in Chicopee by a single mother, Arriaga shared her story during the event moderated by Rosa Sanchez-Santiago, community outreach counselor at STCC and an alumna. Arriaga, a first-generation college student, is an educator and an Air Force veteran. To read more click here.

STCC PREPPED GRADUATE FOR ART SCHOOL, FUELED PASSION FOR FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY
Kimani Worghs enrolled at Springfield Technical Community College for the same reasons many students cite: affordability, close to home, easy to fit classes around work and understanding instructors.
All of that was true, but what he also found was a college experience that supported, deepened and strengthened his desire to pursue a career in fashion photography.
Some of the photos in the book were shot while he was a student at STCC, and some of the people he met there turned out for the launch at the Valley Photo Center in Tower Square in downtown Springfield to cheer him on and view his work, still displayed in the gallery. To read more click here.

Are you a Ram Warrior?
Make an immediate and consistent impact on the future of STCC students today by enrolling in the Rams Warrior Society!
Many alumni and friends of the college have already enrolled, and represent STCC’s most loyal donors, those who make their annual gifts in monthly installments. Their impact on students as they transform their lives is incredible, consistent, and allows STCC to forecast support.
Your consistent gift allows the college to direct student support on a predictable basis, which for us is invaluable. The Rams Warrior Society is truly shaped by the leading philanthropists at the college – not only do they support our students, but their consistency allows us to better budget financial aid for our students.
"I truly believe that the mission of STCC is among the most important in Greater Springfield. What the school does for the long term growth of individuals and the region is immeasurably important. Springfield centric, regionally focused, the school prepares young people of all ages to build our economy. STCC, its administration, its staff, and its students play a key role for the future, and they are all worth investing in."
