Career exploration key to building the next-generation workforce

When we talk about workforce development, people often envision the later stages in that process, where a person is engaged in relevant post-secondary academic studies, apprenticeships, internships, and/or on-the-job training.

But as important, perhaps more so, is the initial phase where a young person is exposed to and explores various fields of interest, discovering a broad spectrum of potential career options they might not have imagined.

To promote this early career exploration, The STEM Foundation works with the local Dream Builders Education Foundation to fund eye-opening student experiences spanning elementary through high school in the Mid-Columbia.

In December, $23,000 in grants were awarded that will allow teachers, partnering with working professionals, to introduce students to everything from 3D printing technology to cybersecurity to food science to marine biology. It is through such experiences that we aim to spark the journey of the next generation toward fulfilling career pathways.

Looking ahead to the next generation, in February, we are excited to partner with TRIDEC at its annual Economic Outlook event for an interactive session focused on building the next-generation workforce. You are invited to join us as we explore new and emerging career pathways, and how we can bring more opportunity to a wider audience, while allowing businesses and industries to achieve their staffing goals.

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of our efforts.

Mid-Columbia STEM Nexus Initiative funding impacts local students

LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) is one of only four large scale gravitational-wave detectors in the world. In 2015 the LIGO team, with collaborators from around the world, made the first-ever detection of gravitational waves, resulting in the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics being awarded to three LIGO scientists. Having a Nobel prize winning facility in our region provides a unique opportunity to engage and support local K-12 and undergraduate students, many of whom come from groups historically excluded from STEM.

The LIGO Hanford Observatory has expanded with the construction of the new LIGO Exploration Center (LExC), a 5,000 sq.ft. facility that houses interactive exhibits focused on gravitational waves and related sciences that hosts students, educators, and the community.

Virtual Tour of LExC

The STEM Nexus Initiative has funded a pilot docent program that engages local high school students, who split their time at the observatory between outreach and career-focused activities. Outreach work includes facilitating field trips, leading booths at STEM nights, and learning how to communicate science effectively to the public. Students also work with LIGO scientists and engineers to assist with updating outdated control codes, identifying glitches in detector, and a range of assembly projects.

Docents are not only given the opportunity to strengthen their soft skills, which will help in their future careers, but are also serving as role models to the younger students in our area, providing a tangible benefit for both students and docents.” - Amber Strunk, LIGO Outreach Lead

STEM Like ME!® is a suite of school-based programs, teacher grants, and professional development opportunities that broadens students’ awareness and perceptions of STEM careers and the coursework and skills necessary to pursue them.

Created and led by The STEM Foundation, STEM Like ME!® programs have inspired more than 31,500 students across Washington.

STEM Like ME!® Empower making an impact on local students

Junior and senior high school students from Chiawana and New Horizons High Schools in Pasco attended the 2nd Annual STEM Like ME!® Empower Student Summit at Columbia Basin College (CBC) on October 13, 2023.

Working in small groups, led by CBC student mentors and STEM professionals, students visited CBC labs and classrooms and engaged in hands-on activities, while learning about career pathways to high-demand, high-wage jobs in our region and beyond.

Students also heard from a panel of CBC MESA students who shared obstacles they had to overcome to attend college, what they wish they knew while still in high school, and what they love about their college experience.

In partnership with Hanford Mission Integration Solutions, junior and senior students from Ki-Be and River View High Schools visited the HAMMER Training Facility as part of the STEM Like ME!® Empower programs hosted in each district.

Hands-on activities offered exploration into potential career paths. Students also learned about secondary schools, and internship opportunities in our area.

"I had no idea there were so many different jobs out here" was just one of many positive student responses shared after the experience.

Thank you to HMIS and the many Hanford contractors, Columbia Basin College, and Washington State University Tri-Cities for your participation in this great event.

If you are interested in learning more about STEM Like ME!® programs, including hosting or volunteering during the 2023-2024 school year, please email Heather Tibbett, Program Manager, The STEM Foundation.

Access Report

When we provide access to high quality child care, the long term results are higher graduation rates and lower rates of incarceration. We want to solve all these other problems down the road, but the solutions are right at the beginning — we simply can’t afford NOT to invest in early learning.” -Dr. Soleil Boyd, Senior Program Officer for Early Learning, WA STEM
