Use Science to Build the Fastest Pinewood Derby Car, EVER.

A former NASA engineer explains how you can use science to build a fast Pinewood Derby car.

For seven years, I worked at NASA on the Mars Curiosity rover. It is just like a Pinewood Derby car, except it has six wheels, it’s nuclear powered and it shoots lasers.

My Cub Scout son and I decided we would take the science principles I used while building stuff at NASA and apply them to making his Pinewood Derby car.

Take a look at some of those science principles in this video and check out my list of the most important steps for making fastest Pinewood Derby car possible.
Friends of Scouting: What It Is And Why It Matters

It’s that time of the year when you’ll start hearing the phrase “ Friends of Scouting ” at unit meetings and district roundtables.

What is Friends of Scouting? What does it mean to be a Friend of Scouting? And why should you consider becoming one?

First, the basics: Friends of Scouting is your council’s annual giving campaign. In most councils, Friends of Scouting (or FOS) represents the council’s largest source of income.

During the campaign, a volunteer will visit your pack meeting or troop court of honor to explain the campaign and make an appeal for your support. You’ll be asked to make a  tax-deductible pledge to your local council.

The natural next question is: Why should I give money to my local council? Many councils answer this with what’s called “The Iceberg Analogy.” Read More

Cub Scouts: Getting Parents Involved

Featured on cubscoutideas.com

Recently, one of our readers asked for suggestions on how to get Cub Scout parents more involved in helping. That is something that many packs struggle with. How do we get parents to help out so that the burden isn’t all on the den leaders or committee members?

We all are busy, but I’m a big believer that we make time for what’s important to us. Scouting isn’t like soccer or baseball where we’re on the sidelines cheering our sons on. Cub Scouting is hands on. Whether you’re helping them learn how to tie knots or showing them how to use a hammer or teaching them how to cook their own breakfast, parents will definitely need to be involved.

I did some research and found 14 ideas that may be helpful. Not all of the suggestions will be appropriate for your pack or den, but I hope that some of these will be beneficial for you. Read More

Scout Executive Minute

Over the past 7 weeks we’ve welcomed 4 new Troops to Scouts BSA. Troops 801, 619, 177, and 628. In addition, Troops 601, 393 and 372 are all in the organization phase. What’s so unique about this you ask? All of these Troops serve girls, and they’re incredibly excited to be members of the BSA with ambitions of becoming Eagle Scouts. If you live in Kokomo, Lafayette, or Grant County you’ve likely seen stories about these young ladies on the front page of the newspaper. The Kokomo Tribune featured an awesome article highlighting the girls from Troop 619 Chartered to the Russiaville Lion’s Cub, check out the article online. These same girls made #1 on Bryan On Scouting’s blog post about Scout patrol names you won’t forget with their creative name the Atomic Biscuits.

I had the opportunity to meet many of these girls and their Scoutmaster Dennis Dunten two weekends ago. Dennis wasn’t shy about telling me why he jumped at the chance to be Scoutmaster of a Troop for his daughter and her friends. He said the relationship he’s built with his son is due in large part to the adventures they’ve had together in Scouting. His daughter Danielle wanted to have those same adventures, and Dennis wanted to make sure he had built the same strong relationship with his daughter. They toyed with the idea of bringing her along on campouts with her brother’s Troop, but Danielle wanted to experience Scouting with her friends.

Troop 619 is the first Scouts BSA Troop for girls in Howard County. They already have their sights set on a High Adventure trip overseas and plan to attend Camp Buffalo this summer. These girls are motivated, they’re excited and they’re immersing themselves in Scouting. Dennis and the other leaders of Troop 619 are helping to build our next generation of leaders, they’re instilling Scouting values in these young ladies and we’ll all be better for it. If you know a young person who could benefit from Scouting (boy or girl), please reach out and invite them to join one of our programs. This movement changes lives, and today more than ever, we need more young people and adults alike with Scouting Values.

As always, thanks for all you do to make a difference for kids through Scouting.

Yours in Scouting,

Ben
