LBW Community College announces the addition of men’s and women’s golf as well as men’s and women’s cross country to its intercollegiate athletic program.

“I am excited to announce that LBW will be adding two new athletic programs to our already successful athletic program,” said LBW President, Dr. Brock Kelley.

“It is, and always will be, our goal to create opportunities for young men and women to continue to develop their craft at the collegiate level and these two sports are the next step in providing that opportunity.”

Both programs will compete within the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

“With one of our campuses in Greenville, continued support from the city, and access to one of the nicest golf courses in the state, we feel that Cambrian Ridge is the perfect location to serve as our home course.”

The Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville is one of 11 RTJ golf sites in Alabama. Golf matches and cross-country meets are set to begin in Fall 2023.

Kelley stated, “In partnership with Covington County Schools, LBW will host cross-country meets at the Covington County Track and Field and Cross Country Facility.”

“Athletic competition is an important part of the Saints Family, and our athletic department is committed to providing that opportunity to our community and student-athletes,” said LBW Athletic Director, Steve Helms.

With the addition of these programs, LBW will now offer nine sports including women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s cross country.

“The search for a head coach for each of these new programs will begin immediately,” President Kelley added.

For more information on the LBW cross country and golf programs, contact Steve Helms at shelms@lbwc.edu.

Retirement

Sharon Stricklin| Mathematics Instructor

Instructor of Mathematics and Computer Applications, Mrs. Sharon Stricklin retired from the College on September 1, 2022, after completing 22 years of service to LBW.

Mrs. Stricklin has spent 28 years in her career, and said "I never had a desire to teach, and did not pursue education in college, but the good Lord opened a door which led me down this path. His ways are always best, and I am very grateful that I followed His lead regarding my career."

Originally hired at LBW in 2000 as a Drafting and Design Technology Instructor, Mrs. Stricklin was always passionate about math. "Therefore, I went back to college for the required courses and began teaching Microcomputer Applications in the Fall of 2006 and Mathematics in the Fall of 2009," she said.

"The moments I have enjoyed most while working at the college are what I call the "light bulb" moments," she stated. "I never tire of experiencing these with all students, but am especially thrilled when students who struggle with math concepts and skills finally "GET IT" - when true learning/understanding takes place. It's these moments that have made my career so rewarding."

In parting, Mrs. Sticklin quoted Elizabeth E. Castill "We cross paths with certain people in our tangled lives for a reason. It’s not by chance, not an accident, but for a purpose. You were made to be part of someone’s life for it was written long before you were born."

"To my LBWCC family: I’m very grateful that our paths have crossed, whether for many years or just a brief period. I pray our glorious Heavenly Father’s richest blessings on you all," she said.

In retirement, Mrs. Stricklin enjoys spending more time with her "precious grandchild, 10 month old Sawyer, and getting caught up on things around our home and property."
