RETIREMENTS

Jerry Wishum | Network Administrator

Mr. Jerry Wishum has served this College for over 40 years, and he officially retired on March 1, 2023.

Having always had an interest in computers and show business, he started at LBW as a programmer, and later as a network specialist while working in the Dixon Theater.

He has been an integral part of the Martha & Solon Dixon Center for the Performing Arts since its inception, serving as Technical Manager.

During his 42 years at the College, his fondest memories include times when the Saints Family supported his own family at engagement and baby showers.

"The People. They are what makes the difference," he stated, after being asked what he has enjoyed most while working at LBW.

In retirement, Mr. Jerry plans to continue working on theatre events and spending time writing plays and building sets.

His parting quote is, "Never be afraid to think outside box."

Donna Bass | Director of Financial Aid

Mrs. Donna Bass will retire from LBW on April 1, 2023, after serving the College for over 24 years.

Mrs. Donna started in 1998 as Secretary to the Treasurer, a position in the business office that included payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivables, customer service and balancing bank statements. After completing her bachelor's degree in 2002, she became Coordinator of Financial Aid and Admissions, and following the merger with DMSTC, she became Director of Financial Aid of the Andalusia and Greenville Campuses. She has served as Financial Aid Director for the College since 2014.

"I have many wonderful memories at LBW, from knowing I have helped so many students reach their educational goals, to Saints Days skits and financial aid conferences with a great group of financial aid professionals," she said when pondering her fondest memory throughout her career here.

"I believe I have made lifelong friends here at LBW and in the financial aid world."

Mrs. Donna never thought she would end up working in education. From her time in the legal field, she knew she wanted a position where she could have a long career and eventually retire. Here she is 20+ years later as a member of the Saints Family.

The most enjoyable part of her job has been "helping students who wanted an education to understand the process of how to get financial aid to assist them to reach their goals."

Her retirement plans include moving to the Alabama River and relaxing. Once her husband retires, they hope to travel in the camper to see the U.S.

"It's sad, but sometimes moving on with the rest of your life, starts with goodbye." -Carrie Underwood

Danita Day | Child Development Instructor

Effective June 1, 2023, Mrs. Danita Day will retire from LBW having completed 10 years at the College.

Mrs. Danita has spent 15 years in public education and another 13 years in a related field.

She started at LBW in 2013 in the Adult Education program helping adults to achieve their GED.

"I have enjoyed everything about working at LBW! All the staff, fellow colleagues, and students have made my work experience a great one that I will cherish always," she says.

Mrs. Danita has a passion for teaching and enjoying life. "With this career, I'm able to do both [teaching and playing with young children, and teaching young adults how to work with young children]. Friedrich Froebel once said, and I quote 'Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child's soul.'"

When asked about her fondest memories, she says, "All of my college students and Little Saints students have touched my heart in so many ways. The greatest joy is seeing a student succeed and go on to work in this field; to love what they do, and really make a difference in a child's life."

Following retirement, she plans to spend more time with family, friends, and grandchildren. She says, "I hope my husband and I can travel and visit places we have never been able to in the past."

Her parting quote, by Angela Schwindt, "While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about."

Message from Eric Lidh

Last Friday I finished my final travel show season at LBW. When I started here 46 years ago I had no idea what would happen. Over 500 drama scholarship students have performed over 1000 shows for over 350,000 kids in that time. LBW has supported this part of my program by paying for props, costumes and royalties so that we could go to schools and not charge them. This year we traveled to schools in four counties and every principal wanted us back immediately.

Now I am going on my own personal tour. My long-time friend Cavelle Jones who taught drama at Andalusia High for 28 years and has been with me the past two tours is jumping in with great ideas for next year.

Thank you all for years of support and encouragement.

Eric Lidh,

Former Director of Drama
