Sandy recently welcomed Congresswoman Maxine Dexter for a visit highlighting some of the projects, places, and priorities shaping our community.
Mayor Kathleen Walker joined Congresswoman Dexter, along with City staff, for a tour that included stops at Meinig Park, AntFarm Café, and Cedar Park, along with a conversation about Sandy’s ongoing work to improve our wastewater infrastructure with an eye toward minimizing the cost impact on ratepayers. Dexter has helped secure more than $1.8 million in proposed federal funding for Sandy wastewater projects.
“We were excited to welcome Congresswoman Dexter to Sandy today to show her the work we’re doing to keep our community a great place to live,” Mayor Walker said. “From improving our parks to modernizing critical wastewater infrastructure, these projects are investments in Sandy’s future. We’re especially grateful for the Congresswoman's partnership in securing federal funding for our wastewater system upgrades, which helps reduce future utility rates for our residents.”
The visit was a great opportunity to share a little of what makes Sandy special, and to highlight the work happening today to make sure our infrastructure, parks, and community spaces are ready to serve Sandy for years to come.

As the leaves begin to fall throughout Sandy, we encourage you to #leavetheleaves in your yards!
One of the most valuable things you can do to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the winter cover they need. Also keep in mind: pushing leaves from your yard into the street violates the city code and can significantly clog and damage our stormwater systems. But you can help by simply leaving your leaves alone!
Please note: this applies to privately owned green spaces and does not apply to sidewalks/walkways. Landowners are still responsible for keeping pedestrian paths safe.
You may also see leaves pushed and piled around the tree lines of our parks instead of being completely removed. We'll make sure to keep the health of our lawns and the functionality of our high use parks in mind, while allowing the leaves to naturally decompose.

As a member of Bee City USA, we're encouraging citizens to take the pledge to Go Lights Out for the Fall! By reducing sky glow, we can help migrating birds (one of our many pollinator groups) make it to their destinations safely.
Many birds migrate at night, and as they pass over brightly lit cities, sky glow can drown out the stars, confusing them and luring them into urban areas.
Once you take the Lights Out pledge, you can take steps to follow best practices at home:
- Turn off your outdoor lights when you’re not using them
- Ensure that your outside lights aim down and are well-shielded
- Install motion sensors on your outside lights so that they’re only on when needed
- Choose warm bulbs (3,000 Kelvins or under) when converting outdoor lights to LED
- During migration seasons, draw your blinds or curtains to reduce light spill
Peak migration in the fall is September 19th - October 19th so please consider taking the pledge and implementing some of these changes in your home.
Take the Lights Out pledge and learn more here.
PS: Want to get detailed data about the migrating birds? Check out this website to learn how many birds migrated over Clackamas County last night, what type of birds are migrating in this area, and much more!
