The Scan Times

An MGH Radiology Research Newsletter

August 2022

Happy August, everyone. Two quick notes before we get started.

First, word on the street is that the Mass General Research Institute (MGRI) is getting ready to launch its 2022 Image Contest. Past winners include the image in the banner of this email, by Elias Halabi, PhD, of the Center for Systems Biology. Learn more about the contest and about last year's winners here.

On a related note, we always love to hear from musicians in the MGH Radiology Research community. See, for example, the video profile below, in which the Martinos Center's Matt Rosen, PhD, tells us about his punk band (as well as about his science).

If you would like to share any of your musical exploits, please email Gary Boas with details. Feel free to include links to YouTube videos or other online media.

Okay, here we go. This issue of the newsletter includes:

Article: Two Different White Blood Cell Types Play Opposing Roles in Affecting Heartbeat Irregularities After Heart Attack

Video: Meet Our Staff: Matt Rosen, PhD

Team Spotlight on The Radiation Safety Committee

6 Journal Paper Summaries

18 Papers in High-Impact Journals

Two Different White Blood Cell Types Play Opposing Roles in Affecting Heartbeat Irregularities After Heart Attack

Research by Matthias Nahrendorf, MD, PhD, of the Center for Systems Biology and colleagues reveals that two different white blood cell types influence ventricular tachycardia (VT) in the heart, suggesting that treatments that influence these cells may help reduce patients’ risk of sudden cardiac death.

Video Profile

Meet Our Staff: Matt Rosen, PhD

Matt Rosen, PhD, director of the Low-Field MRI and Hyperpolarized Media Lab at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Kiyomi and Ed Baird MGH Research Scholar 2022-2027, discusses the fundamentals of his research, his MGH Research Scholar project applying low-field MRI to breast imaging, and how he and his punk band spent their downtime during the pandemic.

Team Spotlight

The Radiation Safety Committee

The Radiation Safety Committee oversees all aspects of radiation protection at Massachusetts General Hospital, including all affiliated research, clinical, instructional and service units that use radiation sources in facilities owned or controlled by the hospital. Mass General employees with questions about using or disposing of radiation sources can contact the hospital's Radiation Safety Officer, Tara Medich, MS, CHP.

In 2021, Advances in Motion: Radiology explored the efforts of committee chair Madan M. Rehani, PhD, to address cumulative radiation exposure at Mass General and elsewhere.
