Across the country, professors in Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) are aligning their courses and fieldwork to the Science of Reading, with the understanding that much of this important instruction was not taught in years past. Eager to equip pre-service educators with the valuable science-based information they’ll need to successfully teach reading in the classroom, university courses are changing—for good reason. This enlightening edWebinar will provide a rationale, framework, and resources for doing this important work. The urgency to include the Science of Reading instruction and its impact on English learners in EPPs will also be examined.
Attendees will learn:
- To identify the most essential, widely acknowledged, evidence-based practices that can have the most impact on literacy instruction overall and instruction for the English learner (including how adjustments to these practices can positively impact English learners)
- A rationale and framework for delineating what expert reading teachers need to know and be able to do, based on the respected Knowledge and Practice Standards
- How to structure courses that integrate learning and applying the essential elements of reading science; a model syllabus will be shared
- Where to access support and resources for program alignment, syllabus enhancement, and professional learning; free resources will be shared
This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-5 teachers, literacy specialists, reading consultants, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. Learn more.

Many reading educators have focused on and mastered teaching the five components of reading, first published in the National Reading Panel Report in 2000. These skills include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. Although proficiency of these skills is essential, this edWebinar will emphasize the need for teachers to possess a deeper understanding of language structures that include phonology, orthography, syntax (the structure of sentences), morphemes, semantics (word and phrase meaning), and the organization of spoken and written discourse. This session will place an additional emphasis on morphological awareness and its contribution to a student’s literacy development.
Attendees will learn:
- How to build word curiosity and a love for words by zeroing in on the components of our language and why these components are essential for the English learner
- What instruction looks like in the early grades
- What is important to focus on in the intermediate grades
- Why morphological awareness is important and how to integrate it into daily routines
This edWebinar will be of interest to PreK-8 teachers, literacy specialists, reading teachers, reading interventionists, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. Learn more.
