Share the Plate for May: Midnight Run

Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless. They coordinate over 1,000 relief missions per year, where volunteers from faith communities, schools, and other civic groups distribute food, clothing, blankets, and personal care items to our New York City neighbors who are homeless. It is the exchange of human interaction, rather than the exchange of goods, that is the essence of the Midnight Run mission. FUSW has been a participating partner of Midnight Run since its inception more than 30 years ago, and our Runs have been a major part of our Social Action program for decades. We collect for our Share-the-Plate partner throughout the month. Visit, clickDonate, and select Share the Plate.
Notecard Fundraiser

June Sidman, Kathleen Fay, and Mary Wilshire have shared beautiful artwork with FUSW that we have printed onto notecards. If you would like to purchase a set of 12 cards for a $25 donation to FUSW, please email Rina ( or Betsy ( and we will coordinate with you.

Springing Back to Life

During the pandemic, our social action and social justice activities have continued mostly under the radar, on an ad hoc basis. Now that many of us are vaccinated, it's time to find out where our help is needed most, then choose which actions to become physically involved in again. It may mean being present at vigils, leading a Midnight Run, delivering our weekly bread donations, volunteering at food pantries, or supporting social and environmental justice initiatives. Join with us! Check your calendar and contact Art Lowenstein (, 914-844-4189) so we can schedule a Zoom meeting date to plan the revival of the FUSW Social Action/Social Justice committee and focus our energy on making a difference again.
Compassion Summit

The Radical Compassion Challenge, through May 5 Meditation teacher and author Tara Brach hosts a free 10-day online event to help build a global movement of compassion in action. After each day's teaching session, Tara will interview one of today's leading voices on the power of compassion, including author Elizabeth Gilbert, actor Sandra Oh, meditation teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn, radio host Krista Tippett, and CNN commentator Van Jones.
