September 2024

September is underway here at Valley Humane Society, and though the weather has yet to change, big changes are coming to our Nevada Street adoption center here in Pleasanton. Pardon our dust in the short term, and stay tuned for an official invitation to Valley Humane’s grand re-opening later this fall. You can be part of this exciting evolution by ordering a tile or exploring larger naming opportunities.

Outside our walls, Valley Humane’s Canine Comfort Pet-Assisted Therapy teams are getting back to schools and libraries with our Paws to Read program, creating a safe space where kids can strengthen their reading skills. Find out how you can sign up, below. We also have a bushel of fun events, like the Pet Fair, just waiting to drop, and our adoption and veterinary teams are hard at work prepping pups and cats to find their new families this fall. Hey! We hope you'll come along for the ride...

Fall in Love with Paws to Read

Build your child’s reading confidence by bringing them out to meet one of Valley Humane’s friendly, certified, pet-assisted therapy dogs. For kids in grades K-6, Paws to Read provides the wonderful opportunity to read aloud judgement-free to a furry friend, which improves literacy while fostering a love of animals. Sign your child up for a pawsitively good time directly through these local libraries:

Pick a Plan for Preparedness

September is Disaster Preparedness Month! It’s important to have a plan in place if something unexpected should happen—especially for our furry friends who depend on us to keep them safe.

Some things you can do to be ready in case of emergency are:

  • Make an evacuation plan and practice it with your pets.
  • Carry a pet safety card to alert emergency responders about animals at home that rely upon you for care.
  • Microchip and ID your pets to speed up reunification (in case they get separated from you) and make sure to have up-to-date contact information on record--and on their collar tags--at all times!

It can be tricky to know how to respond to a natural disaster, fire, or other emergency. Luckily, Valley Humane has plenty of resources to help you get started on a plan that meets your family’s needs.

A Perfect Day to Spay (and Neuter!)

Brush up on ways to enrich your dog’s life! September brings us National Responsible Dog Ownership Day, celebrated on Saturday, September 21. One of the easiest ways to be a responsible pet guardian is to have your pet spayed or neutered. Valley Humane Society’s Phil Scholz Veterinary Surgery Center can help, offering quality, lower-cost surgeries with plenty of availability sooner rather than later.

Additionally, our Surgery Center can provide vaccinations at the time of the procedure for $25 each. For dogs, we can administer the Da2pp, Bordetella, and/or rabies vaccines. For cats, we offer FVRCP and/or rabies. Learn more or book an appointment for your pet today!

Get Set to Match

September is a good time to check with your human resources or accounting department to see if your company offers a gift matching program. Signing up is usually simple, and makes your donations twice as nice, effectively doubling your support to Valley Humane's lifesaving programs and services.
