Reading Black Lives Book Group
Saturday, July 20, 12:15-1:45pm, Hastings Public Library
The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride (2023). Winner of the National Book Award. A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK. NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR, WASHINGTON POST, AND TIME MAGAZINE.
“A murder mystery locked inside a Great American Novel . . . Charming, smart, heart-blistering, and heart-healing.” —Danez Smith, The New York Times Book Review
“We all need—we all deserve—this vibrant, love-affirming novel that bounds over any difference that claims to separate us.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post
Set in 1972 in Pennsylvania, this novel is about small-town secrets and the people who keep them. Workers were digging the foundations for a new development and found a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. When the truth is finally revealed, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community—heaven and earth—that sustain us.

Volunteer to Lead a Summer Worship Service
As you know, we are sharing summer Sunday services with our fellow UUs in Croton (UU Congregation of the Hudson Valley). FUSW’s services will be held via Zoom. Two of FUSW's Sundays have not yet been claimed-- July 14 and July 28 are still available. If you and/or your FUSW friends would like to present the service on one of those Sundays, please contact Diane Guernsey (dianeguernsey.uu@gmail.com).
