TA Tip: Strengthen Families to Thrive

Family engagement plays a vital role in developing relationships with families and helping to grow strong and resilient children and caregivers.

It is important to help families find the support and resources they need to build the 5 protective factors which strengthen families so they can thrive in life and in their communities. This, in turn, will act to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect.

Check-in with your local Family Resource Center (FRC) to find out what is being offered to support families in your area. They have wonderful programs, such as parent education, fun family events, and many other services families often need. Ask to be put on your local FRC email list to receive all updates and schedule of events and programs. Share this information with the families in your program often, as their needs change frequently and they may need support or community connection at various times throughout the year. Add FRC brochures to your enrollment packets and keep some in an area where visitors and families can find them to take as needed.

To find your local FRC and to learn more, visit https://www.fsnh.org/ and to learn more about the 5 protective factors see Provider Resources and visit https://www.nhchildrenstrust.org/

Strengthening Families: Self-Assessment

Children are more likely to thrive when their families have the support they need. By focusing on the five universal family strengths identified in the Strengthening Families Protective Factors Framework, community leaders and service providers can better engage, support, and partner with parents in order to achieve the best outcomes for kids.

April is Prevention Month!

Strengthening Families helps to build strong communities, and child care programs play a big role in this effort. Providers can help build protective factors in families with young children, building on individual family strengths and guiding caregivers with information they need to support healthy child growth and development.

The Five Protective Factors are:

• Parental Resilience

• Social Connections

• Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development

• Concrete Support in Times of Need

• Social and Emotional Competence of Children

Join New Hampshire Children’s Trust in celebrating Prevention Month, a time to recognize the strengths of families and the communities that uplift them! Every April we have the opportunity to not only acknowledge the challenges families face, but also celebrate their incredible resilience. Family is New Hampshire’s best investment, and together, we can build strong communities where every child and family thrives.

Ever wondered how you are prevention? Check out New Hampshire Children’s Trust’s 2024 Resource Guide to learn how you play a role in creating safe and nurturing environments for children, and how else you can support NH families.
