News from the Camp Office
Dear Camp Families,

It has been a wonderful and busy couple of months since our Camp season ended. Our first new "Field of Dreams" is complete, and will be ready to play on when you arrive at Camp next summer! Pete and his crew spent many weeks making that happen, and we are sure you will LOVE the incredible field that they've built for you!

Back at the Camp Office in Sharon, we've been busy too. We've been working making Camp even better for you next summer. We are working on new programs, and looking at every part of your Camp experience to figure out ways to make it even better.

We have an incredible team in our office, and love brainstorming together to think of ways to help you get even more out of Camp next year and in the years to come. Part of my job is to bring new ideas to our team, and I spend some of my time talking with some pretty amazing thinkers who work with children at schools, and in places other than Camp.

I just returned from an amazing "Summit Meeting" in Washington, DC, organized by a group called the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. As many of our parents know, at Kenwood & Evergreen, we try to help our campers learn the skills that you will need to be happy and successful in life, but that you might not learn in school or at home. That's why so many of our activities are designed to give you a chance to be creative, to work together as a team, to learn how to be a leader, how to communicate with others, how to work through challenging situations, and how to keep on trying your best till you reach your goals.

These are many of the skills that you will need to be successful in life, and every day at Camp we are proud of how many of these skills you learn and strengthen during the summer. These are called 21st Century Skills, and I just spent two days with people from all over the country that are trying to figure out how to teach the skills that we teach, only in school or at home. It was an honor to be included in this amazing Summit meeting, and as the only Camp Director in the room, I was able to share what we know about teaching these skills, while learning from others about how to teach them in new and creative ways.

As we help you unlock your creative selves, we need to continue to be creative too! You are never too old to learn, and some of the very best time that I spend during the school year is at conferences like this one, learning how to make your summer at Camp even more fun and move valuable to you!

I can't wait to see you all at our upcoming reunions! Till then, we'll be talking, planning, learning and innovating...all to make the summer of 2014 your best summer yet!

With love from the Camp office,

Scott

As the weather has turned colder and the leaves have fallen from the trees you may feel like Camp is far, far away. Don't worry...there are plenty of great opportunities to reconnect, reflect, and remember.

Update from Jason & Deena!

the sebells

Hello from the Sebells!

We hope that you've been having a fun fall. In September and October we had a blast seeing so many returning campers at the GAGA events, and we can't wait to see even more of you at the two reunions coming up. Jason has been very busy with home visits, meeting lots of great new campers and camp families from around the country and overseas!

It's also been a busy fall on Camp's many social media platforms. We have been posting things on our Facebook, Youtube, Tumblr, and other media portals almost every single day of the week. We just put up all of the music from this year's Hollowpallooza up on our SoundCloud page for your enjoyment. Make sure to check those out these great tunes!

Parents - we are also posting more regularly on the Camp blog. We want to be your resource for the latest studies, op-eds and videos on child development, parenting, and more. If you haven't signed up to automatically receive emails of our blog please click here.

Lastly, we are excited to announce a new online feature: Ask a Camp Director. Throughout the year we will be scheduling online discussions with our Camp community, using our Twitter and Blog platforms. Some of these will be geared towards parents, while others will be a fun chance for campers to ask us any questions that they might have about Camp. Our first Ask A Camper Director will take place on our blog on Wednesday, November 27 starting around 5pm. We will be posting a couple of potential discussion topics, but let us know if you want to ask anything else. Come join the discussion!

Don't forget to check out and Like the Camp Facebook page. Each week on the wall we post:

  • #CampContests - Photos from our 'Wear your Camp Shirt', 'Best Camp Photo', 'Funniest Photo in a Camp Shirt' and 'Largest Camp Group Photo' contests (for more details please see previous postings on our Facebook wall)
  • #MovieMondays - Each week we post a great Camp video, either from this past summer or from our ever-growing archive.
  • #WhereinCamp - The weekly 'Where in camp' photo competition that posts every Wednesday afternoon.
  • #ThrowbackThursdays - where we post photos from the last 3 decades of Camp to give you guys a chance to see what our community looked like 'back in the day'. We also post photos from more recent summers at Camp.
  • #Nomday - This is a new feature, where we post one of Cooking Rachel's tasty recipes from this summer's cooking periods. Each Friday we will be challenging you to recreate these yummy dishes at home and post a photo.
And when you are hanging out with your Camp friends don't forget to forward us your photos. We'd love to post them for everyone to see!

Come and join the fun, and stay connected with your Camp friends!

Your friends,

Jason & Deena

Hello to all campers, counselors, parents and alumni,

It is hard to believe that we are three months removed from all the laughter, fun, and excitement that is Camp!  It has been a busy fall for me, but one that was very rewarding.

The alumni reunion weekend was right after Camp.  We had a good showing of many generations of Kenwood-Evergreen alums. There were about 120 or so former campers and counselors, and many brought their families. Over the weekend there were lots of Camp activities, including swimming, waterskiing and tubing, the zipline (it was mobbed), a softball game, and of course a modified Gold Rush for the kids.  At night we had campfires with singing and making s'mores!  A good time was definitely had by all.

Several weeks later we had the 12th annual Mickey's Kids golf tournament.  Amazingly, it was another huge success.  It has been told to us that it is highly unusual for a charitable golf tournament to remain profitable beyond it's fifth year yet here we are finishing our 12th!  It was wonderful to see many of our alumni at the event, as well as almost the entire camp administration.  The weather was glorious, and once again many of us believed that Mickey was looking down and ordering a perfect day.

With that event over, Rick and I flew out to California. We were first visiting friends outside of San Francisco, and then flew to San Diego to see Rick's baby granddaughter.  The weather in both areas was gorgeous, and Rick and I did a lot of walking and biking.

This past Sunday, I went to see Arthur Sharenow, the former owner and director of Camp, who had a showing of his wonderful photographs.  Arthur and Judy travel all around the world taking pictures of these beautiful, exotic locations.  Once again, many Camp alumni were at the event so it was great catching up.

In a few weeks, I will be attending the Bar/bat Mitzvahs of Zoe and Cy Krevlin.  I am so looking forward to celebrating with them and their families.  Heartiest congrats to both Zoe and Cy.  I can't wait to see everyone at the upcoming reunions.  In the meanwhile, I am missing you all like crazy!

Hugs and kisses,

Phyllis

CrossFit Kids May Be Coming To Camp!

We are actively investigating adding a new activity to Camp for this coming summer: CrossFit Kids!

About CrossFit & CrossFit Kids

For those of you that have yet to come across the latest fitness phenomena, CrossFit is defined as 'constantly varied, high-intensity functional fitness', but more importantly its a FUN, cool way to exercise and stay healthy.

CrossFit - Let Me Tell You About CrossFit
CrossFit - Let Me Tell You About CrossFit

CrossFit Kids is a program designed to help kids and teenagers develop a lifelong passion for exercise. CrossFit and CrossFit Kids are built on a philosophy of being 'fit for life'. It incorporates a constant variation of functional movements that kids need to play: pulling, pushing, running, throwing, climbing, lifting and jumping! A CrossFit Kids workout can include anything and everything from bodyweight movements (pull ups, push ups etc) to gymnastics movements (handstands, backwards rolls) to Olympic weightlifting (clean and jerks, snatches) to something as random as flipping a tractor tire. But the coolest thing about CrossFit is that all of the movements can be scaled to any age or level of fitness and are instructed safely by qualified CrossFit Kids Trainers.

CrossFit K&E Community

Much like Kenwood & Evergreen, CrossFit is built on a foundation of community values. From the outset CrossFit was designed to be a community of people supporting, helping and encouraging each other to achieve their fitness goals regardless of their ability level. Working out as a group creates a shared experience that brings people together. "CrossFitter's" not only take pride in their own progression but there's an invested interest in the progression of others and an excitement to see others achieve. With the community already present at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen its inevitable that CrossFit K&E is going to be a place where healthy risks are taken, personal goals are achieved and success is celebrated by all.

An Amazing Alumni Reunion

Hello K&E Alum!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all and Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate. I hope this post finds you all well.

This past August we had an amazing turnout at our Camp Alumni reunion.  Every bunk in Evergreen was occupied and just about every bunk in Kenwood junior camp was as well. People enjoyed climbing on the ropes course, taking boats out, waterskiing, fishing, softball, crafts & ceramics, campfires with songs and Smore's.  We also had an amazing breakout by current K&E staff members as a part of Gold Rush!  The majority of the kids competed in an apache relay with a magnificent rope burning to end the event.

I feel confident in speaking for everyone that a great time was had by all!

Boston area Alumni, if you are around the day after Thanksgiving (Friday Nov. 29th) please try to attend our family gathering at Everwood Day Camp.  The event starts at 11 am and includes a pizza lunch, drinks & games/activities for the kids.  Please RSVP to me, no later than Nov. 22nd, if you can make it and include how many are in your group with the ages of children.  Hope to see many of you then.

Once again, enjoy your holiday season & I hope to hear from you and/or see you in the near future.

All the best,

Liz
